Perth on a Penny Royal a Day: Freebie New Year’s Day Downunder

February 27, 2014 by John EdwardsLeave a Comment

John M. Edwards finds a six-month circumnavigation of Australia offers much more than empty Outback vistas of red dust and rock formations. but what better way to end you stay than plopping down at a hostel in Perth where everybody knows your name, one-legged pub crawls are the game, and where the Yanks take home the "Americas's Cup" trophy once again! Writing about New Year's Eve the day after is an annual letdown, unpublishable, an egregious … [Read more...]

The Abominable Sumatran

February 26, 2014 by John EdwardsLeave a Comment

"Get your stinking paws off me, you damn dirty apes!" A shaggy American with a Yankees cap and soul patch spat out the words haltingly, photographing a rust-colored simpering simian with a winsome pout who looked vaguely human. Unfortunately, the American was me. It was a fair imitation of Charlton Heston in Planet of the Apes. Except we weren't extras in a futuristic flick where evolution goes awry. (As you'll remember, in the film, … [Read more...]

Finding Peace and Relaxation at The Oaks at Ojai

February 10, 2014 by Michelle YamLeave a Comment

The sky was clear blue. It was another beautiful and warm day, like how most days are here in Southern California. The road ahead finally opened up. After about an hour of driving through congested Los Angeles traffic, it was a relief to enter the stretch of the 101 Ventura freeway where it looked like a deserted highway. Taking a road trip on a Monday when most people start their work week certainly has its advantages. I arrived at my … [Read more...]

It is true that France is a beautiful country that offers something special and distinct in each one of its cities. Lille is a city located in the North Eastern region of the country and is inarguably one of the most beautiful of all. It’s beauty lies in its perfect tranquility, peaceful environment surrounded by some of the most fascinating structures in architectural history, lush green parks, galleries and museums dedicated to the history of … [Read more...]

Secret slopes: Europe’s hidden ski villages

February 1, 2014 by Adam R1 Comment

If you have always assumed that a skiing holiday is out of your price range, or you've been on a trip but were put off by busy slopes and over-crowded restaurants, then think again as there might be another option. Go 'off-piste' with your choice of resort. Mainstream does not suit everyone, and whilst the big famous resorts are well-established and set up with great facilities, by their very nature they bring in a lot of tourists at peak … [Read more...]

Kruger National Park, South Africa – February 2014

February 1, 2014 by Dave2 Comments

For big game viewing it doesn't get much better than Kruger National Park in South Africa. This is a well loved park and to avoid some of the crowds try to visit during the weekdays. The southern part of the park is the most visited and there is accommodation both inside the park and next to its borders. Accommodation outside its borders tends to be cheaper. The National Park Service of South Africa maintains a number of lodges within the park. … [Read more...]

My Journey to the massive Kata Tjuta stones in Australia

January 20, 2014 by Bob GormanLeave a Comment

Here is my personal journey, which started in Sydney and ended up in me finding the most peaceful yet mind-blowing place on Earth - the Kata Tjuta stones in the Northern Territory. Ticking things off When you go to any country in the world for the first time there are certain places you need to tick off your to-do list. In Australia those places are the Gold Coast in Queensland and of course, Sydney. The Opera House, Bondi Beach, the … [Read more...]

Finding a man crush on St. Thomas

January 18, 2014 by Paul KandarianLeave a Comment

It's not often I get a man crush, something usually reserved for sports figures. But Omar and Romulo, two burly boys weighing a combined 1,000 pounds, had me at the first kiss. Omar and Romulo, along with Remo and Franco, are four massive sea lions that you can get up close and personal with – including getting bussed on the cheeks  – at Coral World Ocean Park in St. Thomas, where you can also swim with sharks and sea turtles, do snuba diving … [Read more...]

A Thai New Years in our Village

January 14, 2014 by Dave3 Comments

As with most New Years Eve days we spend much of the day shopping for our big meal in the evening - where family and friends gather - pulling into one of the nearby village houses on motorbikes, walking or by car. First we stop at the huge Tesco Lotus that popped up near the Industrial park several years ago. Employees are stationed out front wrapping hundreds of packages from shoppers. Our budget has gone up this year - instead of 200 baht we … [Read more...]
