15 Reasons to love Barcelona

January 30, 2012 by Maria ClimentLeave a Comment

15.- Because of the skyline. 14.- The cupcakes from cup & cake. 13.- Because you can get a cold orxata (drink made from tiger nuts, typical from Valencia) at the best place of the city ("Sirvent" c/Escorial, 94-100) and take it to drink under a tree at the lovely square Rovira I Trias. 12.- The football team and national pride : FC Barcelona. 11.- The indie-pop music temple: the Sidecar at Placa Reial. 10.- You can practice … [Read more...]

Peach Cigarettes in Tokyo

January 19, 2012 by Kirsty LoganLeave a Comment

The first time I ever smoked a peach cigarette, I was wearing a dinosaur suit and sitting on my friend's balcony in a Tokyo suburb. My friend had a dinosaur suit because he'd gone to a fancy dress party the week before, and I was wearing it because I was cold and it was made of fleece. I'd never been much of a smoker, but the vending machine sold dozens of different flavours and what was the point of traveling halfway around the world if I wasn't … [Read more...]

Malealea Village

January 16, 2012 by DaveLeave a Comment

We met a local in the nearby village and had an hour tour of the surroundings. It is nice to be able to talk to the locals in English - this is not always something you can do around the world. The village is very spread out and home to about 500 people. The homes are traditional, mostly stone and mud with thatched roofs collected from wild grasses and reeds that grow nearby. The village is overseen by a chief - he is elected for a lifetime. … [Read more...]

Village Updates

December 29, 2011 by Dave2 Comments

Our niece Puk Boong shows up promptly every afternoon around 4pm dressed in her school uniform. She is attending a private school where English is taught at a younger age than a public school. The scope of her English so far is in song - she can vaguely sing the words to a number of songs - and has perfect tone. Today, the 29th of December apparently was Christmas Day at her school. She had to wear the "Christmas" uniform and happily performed a … [Read more...]

Exploring the United Kingdom

December 23, 2011 by ChadLeave a Comment

"Exploring the United Kingdom is more affordable you think, with discount voucher sites giving you more for your money." The lure of overseas travel can provide a wonderfully satisfying way to dream away the colds winter months but sometime it's worth considering the options closer to home. In these harsh economic times were all watching our budgets so it's a great time to explore the depths the our country has to offer... In the UK we're … [Read more...]

A Storm on the River Missouri

December 20, 2011 by Ryan O'ReillyLeave a Comment

I was a hundred or so miles into a 2,341-mile canoe trip on the Missouri River when I stumbled on my first big storm. The first indication came when my hat lifted from my head and flew forward into the water. High winds came up well ahead of an advancing cold front a mile or so upriver from Fort Benton, Montana. What had been blowing before had been a breeze, but soon rose to twenty or thirty miles per hour. The filled with dust and sand, which … [Read more...]

Budapest: City of Change

December 9, 2011 by Carolan NathanLeave a Comment

There is a lilting quality to Budapest that changes to crashing crescendos as one visits different parts of this medieval city. Budapest has been prey to many conquerors...the Mongols, the Turks and more recently - the Germans and then the Russians. Now it has been restored to its own people, the Hungarians who arrived to create their first settlement early in the 9th century. This beautiful city straddling the Danube has much to offer to … [Read more...]

Enjoying downtown Napa

December 8, 2011 by DaveLeave a Comment

We spent the evening enjoying two fine Napa restaurants. Usually I'm perfectly satisfied with one meal but on this one evening we opted for two full course dinners at two different restaurants! First we popped into the new restaurant Charlie Palmer Steak at the Archer hotel but didn't eat anything. We then hit up Eiko's on 1st Street, downtown Napa. This is a restaurant that specializes in authentic Japanese cuisine including seasonal dishes … [Read more...]

Huevos Estrellados in Madrid

November 22, 2011 by Miss MociLeave a Comment

After having lived in a couple of different places apart from the people I met and memories I made there is at least one dish or a particular restaurant that I keep in mind and miss. I have been living in Spain for over 2 years now, but I have yet to visit the Spanish capital. So far I haven't really had the time to go. A dish that I have grown to like in Barcelona, but actually has its origins in Madrid is huevos estrellados or rotos … [Read more...]

Fondue and Raclette in Paris

November 15, 2011 by Hans BeltranLeave a Comment

Along with cold temperatures and the holiday season comes the perfect time to eat fondue and raclette again. It's sort of a cozy, more sociable meal as you gather around the fondue pot or the raclette grill on the table over a good glass of wine. However, it is the art of make fondue is more delicate than it seems. Furthermore, not everyone has the right equipment and ingredients at home or maybe you prefer to leave the proper way of … [Read more...]
