Queenstown is the hub of
outdoor activities on the South Island - ie the outdoor capital of New
Zealand especially in the summertime. So when it rains, its not
a good scene here! Activities range from bungee jumping (which
started in New Zealand by the way), to paragliding, to hang
gliding.
This area of New
Zealand has been compared to the resort area of Lake Tahoe in
California. Queenstown sites on the northern part of Lake Wakatipu - and
is a very typical upper class resort town especially with its classy
shops & high priced hotels. |

A great way to get a quick overview of Queenstown and Lake Wanaka is to
take the SkyLine Gondola which shoots up the side of the mountain to the
center on top which contains a few shops and a restaurant. visit this
Gondala's website at:
www.skyline.co.nz - located off of Brecon Street. Parking along the
actual street that leads to the Gondola center can be quite tight, but
there are tiered parking lots on the back side of the hill near the
Gondala center.
There are also two "luge" tracks at the top, one beginner one advanced.
You site on a 4-wheeled cart and zoom down these tracks as fast as you
can go. Brakes are included.
If you continue up past the luge track you can hike several short hiking
trails. One leads through a gloomy forest to the top of a hill where
many of the paragliders take off.
