Wadi Mujib, Jordan – August 2011

Wadi Mujib, Jordan is located in a steep canyon that contains a very “wet and wild” river hiking experience. This wadi or canyon is in the lowest reserve on the planet as its water empties into the Dead Sea (almost 400 meters below sea level). A hike up the canyon is not for the faint of heart, rather it is an adrenaline producing experience. Sign the waiver at the main entrance, pay the admission fee and collect a life jacket. The entire hike is about 2 km – and you should allow 2 to 3 hours for the round trip. The entrance to the wadi is flat and open but soon turns into very narrow, extremely steep river eroded iron sandstone walls. Quickly any banks to this river disappear and the only way up the canyon is to wade and swim up river.

Parts of the river flow extremely fast and there are mounted ropes to help with pulling yourself up. If you bring a camera it must be waterproof and securely fastened to your body as you will definitely need all your wits about you when climbing up this river. Steep rocks, large boulders, fast water, waterfalls and narrow canyon walls all make this for a challenging dangerous hike. For those who make it to the “end” you will be treated to multiple waterfalls coming down forming a large pool. Note the “sucker” fish in this river – anytime you stop they will continuously nibble at your feet. Climbing up this canyon was one of the top travel experiences we’ve ever had.
