Enjoy the Fresh Air: Top Outdoor Activities in Edinburgh

January 24, 2013 by IvanLeave a Comment

The famous Edinburgh Castle

A visit to Edinburgh doesn’t just include exploring the culture, history and entertainment. The city may be famous for its majestic castle, impressive Hogmanay celebrations and the incredible Fringe Festival but it’s also a gateway to the great outdoors. With hills, rugged landscapes and miles of adventure on the city’s doorstep, it’s a perfect place to base yourself if you want to discover what the surroundings have to offer.

Check out any of the affordable hotels in Edinburgh to ensure your stay in the city is as cheap as possible. After all, you’ll only be using the hotel room to sleep in; seeing as your days will consist of breathing the fresh air, admiring the wonderful views and partaking in some outdoor activities.

Walking in the Pentlands
The Pentlands feature over 60 miles of routes that suit all levels of fitness. This beautiful landscape was crafted by glaciers and is a truly picturesque walking destination, and the fun starts just outside Edinburgh’s by-pass. You can get to the Pentland Hills Regional Park by bus from the city centre, but if you prefer driving there are several car parks, although they can be quite busy. The Regional Park is home to much wildlife such as voles, stoats, mosses and lichen. Dogs are also welcome, but ensure that he is well trained.

Rowing
While many families may head for the seaside to enjoy some quality time together, digging for treasure and flying kites, those who wish to tackle the waves could do well with the Portobello Sailing and Kayaking Club, offering rowing lessons for people of all ages.

Hiking in the Pentlands

Cycling
Edinburgh’s derelict inner city railway lines are extremely popular cycling routes nowadays. With the help of an innertube map, in the style of the London Underground guides, you can follow the colour-coded trails and enjoy a cycling stint with a difference.

Climbing
Whether it’s clambering up the craggy hills and mountains or heading to the Edinburgh International Climbing Arena, you can test yourself with climbing and abseiling on the natural rock face of a disused quarry, this challenging sport is a must for those fit enough to try it.

Paintballing
Particularly great if there’s a few of you, paintballing is perfect for groups of people willing to get a bit grubby and a join in with this hands on sport. Providing an ultimate adrenaline rush, paintballing is awesome for stag and hen parties, as well as group days out, just for the fun of it.

Cliff Jumping
One of those sports that you just don’t do on your own, but can be incredibly fun if you put your safety into the hands of a reputable company. Nae Limits provide excellent cliff jumping opportunities on the outskirts of Edinburgh, as well as canyoning, white water rafting and many more exhilarating activities.

Whether you want to enjoy the outdoors at your own pace or test yourself with a challenging activity, Edinburgh and its surrounding areas are an excellent place to do just that. Base yourself in the city and enjoy what the area has to offer.
