Somewhere Above it All by Holli Fawcett Clayton is the author’s first book. It tells the story of Marren, a woman who has suffered greatly at the hands of her late husbands’ opioid fueled drug addictions and her quest to move on with her life. Integral to the story is her attempt to summit Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania and her desire to overcome her grief of losing her husband to drugs.
During the climb, the story intertwines flashbacks to her previous life with her husband and the reasons that led her to pursue the climb. While on the mountain she meets an intriguing cowboy named Chris and over the course of the 8 day climb they get to know each other more intimately. But then something changes in Chris after they successfully summit and Maren is left not knowing why and ultimately loses contact with him. But a surprise ending will leave readers turning the pages to the very end.
