Celebrating the New Year in Rome

December 20, 2011 by Miss MociLeave a Comment

If you don’t have any plans for your New Year’s Eve celebrations yet continue reading for an exciting last minute suggestion. Each year the Eternal City has an entertaining programme filled with music on December 31st and January 1st.

If you stay in Rome apartments you don’t have to worry about driving or parking, but either way it is advised to get there early, because there will be crowds. The traditional New Year’s celebrations take place at Piazza del Popolo. Rock as well as classical music is playing live. A big crowd of people is dancing into the New Year and of course it wouldn’t be a real new year’s celebration without fireworks. One the same square you can find acrobats and other performers entertaining mostly children. Another great place to enjoy live music and fireworks is the Colosseum on Via dei Fori Imperiali, but if you would like it a little less crowded there are also other places in the city that offer a live music programme and fireworks on this evening.

Until January 8th you can also visit an exhibition of traditional nativity scenes, which takes place next to Santa Maria del Popolo.

But the biggest highlight of the holiday season in Rome is the New Year’s Parade on January 1st. Everyone comes out of their apartments in Rome to fill the streets and celebrate the new year. More than 10 000 people participate and attend this parade each year celebrating cultural diversity. Actively participating are military, civic and school marching bands from Italy but also other parts of the world. The crowd marches along the Via della Conciliazione with people on the side cheering and waving. The march ends on Saint Peter’s Square where the Pope gives his annual New Year’s address and blessing. This day has also been declared as Worldwide Day of Peace.

Each new year we would like to start with great faith and enthusiasm. That’s why we come up with New Year’s resolutions. What are your resolutions and goals this year? What better way to start the new year than attending the New Year’s parade in Rome?
