England with the Family

July 19, 2014 by Krystal ELeave a Comment

Hadrians-Wall-Outside-LondonEngland is a great destination for the whole family. The intricacies of English culture are many and the history of the British Isles in general date back past the Romans. For Americans or Canadians worried about traveling abroad with the family England provides just enough familiarity to feel safe, while having enough culture and history to feel completely new and leave the whole family curious and excited at every turn.

England is a great place for people of all tastes. The size of the country makes it easy to enjoy all the wonders, culture, history, food and arts of London and easily be on the rugged and rocky coast the next day enjoying small fishing towns. The north, especially the Lake District, and Yorkshire Dale National Park, provide amazing hiking, trekking and camping, and a beautiful drive from all point’s south through the rolling green hills and small towns of the English countryside. The very famous and very cool Hadrian’s Wall built by Roman Emperor Hadrian is also very cool to walk along if in the Northern Areas.

When visiting England most families will fly into London. Not only is it the cheapest airport but it is hard not to have a good time in the Queen’s city.

The rumors of London being an expensive city are not completely unfounded. However there are some great deals on places to stay. When looking for accommodation, London guesthouses really are the best for multiple people. Part bed and breakfast, part small apartment the London guesthouse provides room, privacy and the ideal jumping off point for adventures around the city. Many of the guesthouses provide meals, some just breakfast, some all inclusive. Many provide kitchens and act as small apartments, so do a little investigating; the price differences reflect services as well. A small London Guesthouse is going to have more amenities than a hostel or typical hotel room.

Kensington-Gardens-LondonLondon is more than just a global financial hub. It is one of the most diverse cities in the world, with huge populations from all over the former British Empire. This provides for a global cultural hub to explore, and even many inexpensive or free activities that will keep the whole family interested. From small activities like watching the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace or visiting the Peter Pan statue in the stunning Kensington garden, to big undertakings like the free Natural History museum, especially the Dinosaurs for kids or the unbelievably cool Borough Food Market, London has something for everyone.
London is also a great city for walking. It is a safe place to be and the neighborhoods are all very different. Walk the old cobbled streets, the small alleys, take the family on a ride on The River Thames, feel the history under your feet. For Americans in general it is hard not to think how young of a country we are in comparison.

With so much to do in a country, go explore. England is safe, friendly and easy to travel through. Spend a few days exploring the history of London, rent a car, enjoy the countryside the small towns, beautiful coast and amazing parks in the North. England is a calm place and it rubs off on everyone.
