A Week in Guadalcanal: Notes from the Solomon Islands

October 1, 2020 by Dave2 Comments

Where are the Solomon Islands? This country is located in the Coral Sea close to Papua New Guinea and about a 3 hour flight north east of Brisbane Australia. Typically not a cheap destination, either flights, hotels, car rental or food (which in our experiences, was basic and bland). Known as the 'hapi isles' for its friendly people, for its marine life, and significant World War II history. The main airport is in Honiara, the capital city. I … [Read more...]

Discovering Bambang

September 30, 2020 by Junfil Olarte1 Comment

The journey began as I and several friends arrived and converged at Manila Airport. Our shuttle van waited to fetch us, ready to set off for Bambang - site of a special gathering for a poetry circle we would be attending. It was, indeed, a tedious long land journey. However, the enjoyable company of my friends and the vibrant view outside the car window somehow comforted me during the ongoing long hours of travel. I noticed ourselves getting … [Read more...]

Impressions: Ulanbaatar, Mongolia

August 1, 2020 by Dave6 Comments

I landed in Ulanbaatar in the very early am. My pre-arranged ride was not waiting at airport so I found a taxi who promptly delivered me to my guest house, 20 mins to town w/o traffic. Two story guesthouse. I ended up on the second floor - frustrated because the inside door to the guesthouse was locked and it was 430am. Knocking over and over again resulted in no action from within. I began to prep a rudimentary sleeping arrangement in the … [Read more...]

Brazilian Cachaça trip Day 11: Curitiba and Brasilia

July 22, 2020 by Peter BanksLeave a Comment

When visiting Curitiba, any individual or group that has an interest in cachaça must visit Orlando Regis. It just so happened that while I was in Morretes, Bruna Gomes of Porto Morretes had suggested that I go visit Orlando, since I had time on my last day before my trip back to Brasilia. Thanks to her, I was able to set up some time with him. Orlando Regis and his wife have one of the largest collections of cachaça in the country. At over … [Read more...]

Visit Ushuaia, Argentina – July 2020

July 1, 2020 by DaveLeave a Comment

El Fin del Mundo, or in English, the End of the World. Such is an appropriate phrase to describe the southernmost city on the entire planet. Several airlines including Aerolíneas Argentinas, TAM & LAN Airlines fly to the airport - the primary connector city is Buenos Aires. Ushuaia's tiny airport is located only about a 10 minute drive from downtown. If you spend any amount of time here, it is helpful if you enjoy seafood! A number of … [Read more...]
