Day 4 – Plantations, Bayou

by Dave · 2 Comments

Rosedown Plantation is located at 12501 La. Hwy. 10 in the West Feliciana Parish; this is the quintessential Southern Louisiana plantation experience. Rosedown was established in the 1830's by a wealthy couple. At the height of their prosperity this plantation contained over 3400 acres and several hundred slaves. The grounds are gorgeous - in the summer full blooming pink crepe myrtle trees are draped with long hanging Spanish moss. In the … [Read more...]

Splendour of the Far East: The Philippines

July 5, 2008 by Junfil Olarte1 Comment

My plane bucks like a wild horse on the final approach before landing through disturbing clouds that crowd late afternoon summer skies over Manila. Beside me a Singaporean Flight Engineer and his wife eagerly peer out the window for a first glimpse of the city. "We've been visiting the islands a number of times," she explains, reminding me of how neighbouring Asians refer to the rest of the country, "and can't wait to get back. Philippines are … [Read more...]

Exploring Havana: Queen of the Caribbean

May 18, 2008 by Habeeb SalloumLeave a Comment

To fully discover Havana both old and new, we decided to explore the city in two stages. In the morning, we would explore the new part by auto and in the afternoon roam through the old section by foot. I had visited Havana numerous times before, but I had not truly discovered the city. This time it was to be different. We began our exploration of Havana by car in the Miramar district, with its foreign embassies and plush hotels, in the new … [Read more...]

Vines of Mendoza – May 2008

May 1, 2008 by DaveLeave a Comment

Arguably the centerpiece of the Vines of Mendoza is the resort and spa, a community built around 21 villas ranging from 1,000 to 2,700 square feet. Surrounded by vineyards and situated along the shoreline of a small body of water, the views from the villas are always spectacular especially of the snow capped Andes and during sunrise and sunset. Each villa is located within a short walking distance of the lobby, restaurant and gorgeous pool (with … [Read more...]

The Golden Triangle of Andalucia

April 28, 2008 by ALO Magazine1 Comment

The rattle of castanets and the sob of guitars drift into the narrow streets from hole-in-the-wall flamenco night spots. Not since tears would come to my eyes when Hansel and Gretel got lost in the woods, had I ever imagined that I could be lost in a forest. But here I was, fully-grown and wandering in the late afternoon gloom, softly calling for my husband. Softly because this was no ordinary woods but a hallowed forest with 850 towering … [Read more...]

Denali National Park – April 2008

April 1, 2008 by DaveLeave a Comment

Denali National Park is located between Fairbanks and Anchorage and is home to the mega attraction, Mt. McKinley - North America's tallest mountain at 20,320 feet. Unfortunately McKinley is only seen about 25% of the time as this mountain creates its own weather and which means it and most of the park are covered in clouds the majority of the time. Come prepared to expect any type of weather anytime of year. But if you luck out and visit on a … [Read more...]

Siam de los Andes Huaraz Peru Thai Restaurant is one of the best Thai restaurants in all of South America. In fact it is one of the best Thai restaurants that we've tried outside of Thailand and that is saying a lot as we have tried many. Siam de los Andes is run by the Thai climber Naresuan and this restaurant is very popular with climbers. It is located on the corner of Gamarra & Morales at Av Agustin Gamarra N 560. Mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana L.) – February 2008

February 1, 2008 by DaveLeave a Comment

Mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana L.) - The Mangosteen is simply called the Queen of the fruit and you will know why when you taste it. We have sampled the Mangosteen's subtle sweet flavors worldwide especially in the tropical countries of SE Asia where when in season it is as common as oranges and bananas are in the West. Unfortunately it is still little known in the West despite the incredible marketing of the Mangosteen juice. It is not allowed … [Read more...]

Relishing the Mountains and Forests of the Dominican Republic

December 12, 2007 by Habeeb SalloumLeave a Comment

Not that I was not enjoying the pleasures of Playa Dorado -Puerto Plata's chief resort area. In spite of all the tourist facilities a traveller could ask for, from casinos, fine restaurants to enticing sands, I developed the urge to explore the nearby region in the Dominican Republic. After studying what the numerous organized tours offered, I decided on the Santiago- Jarabacoa excursion - a trip which included the city of Santiago, … [Read more...]
