Ashley Colburn: Travel Host, Producer & Writer

April 29, 2012 by Dave1 Comment

We first saw Ashley speak in Los Angeles where she was on a panel of travel influencers discussing current trends in travel. She is a prolific traveler who has turned her passion for travel and adventure into a career. Recently we had a chance to interview her about her travels, TV shows, and adventures.   Q. Briefly tell us about your background and what first attracted you to traveling? I come from a family of travelers. My … [Read more...]

Finding the Flavors, Spring in West Sonoma County

April 20, 2012 by DaveLeave a Comment

The allure of wine tasting at family owned boutique wineries of West Sonoma County is calling. The romance of several nights tucked away in Guerneville - away from crowds, hidden in the gentle fog of west county is downright appealing. Located only about 25 minutes from Santa Rosa and under 90 minutes from San Francisco this region of Sonoma County makes a great multi-day destination/weekend getaway. In order to avoid the summertime crowds … [Read more...]

Ngoma Safari Lodge Botswana

March 1, 2012 by DaveLeave a Comment

Ngoma Safari Lodge is located on the edges of Chobe National Park in Botswana. This fairly new property opened in May 2011 and was officially dedicated in July 2011 with his Excellency, Botswana's President Seretse Khama Ian Khama attending the opening ceremonies. This is isolated luxury at its finest and rawest; the lodge is accessible by any of 3 dirt roads - which are more like 4wd tracks among the bush - there are no signs and you must … [Read more...]

We are in Namibia!

February 21, 2012 by Dave2 Comments

I have acquired a Namibian souvenir in the form of a haircut or perhaps, lack of hair. That is what I get for going into an African barber - leave with a totally shaved head - most of the people here have very short hair. So now I fit in well. We are in the Caprivi Strip - a narrow band of the country bordered by Angola, Zambia and Botswana. It has a convoluted history - at times under Italian, German and South African control. Namibia became … [Read more...]

The Power & Beauty of Sub Saharan Africa

February 20, 2012 by Dave5 Comments

Upon finalizing my flights to South Africa from Bangkok, I told a good friend who has traveled extensively in Africa that I would kiss the African soil for him. He replied, "Kiss Africa's ground for me, but remember: Africa always wins. No matter how much you try to make sense of all the nonsense, it'll never make sense. Thus Africa wins." Winning or not, the unpredictability of adventure travel in Sub Saharan Africa has always appealed to me … [Read more...]

Chobe National Park

February 19, 2012 by DaveLeave a Comment

Today we visited the interior of Chobe National Park with our intrepid guide Shime - a Botswanan who hails from a small village 7 hours away near the city of Maun. We are staying at the luxurious isolated Ngoma Safari Lodge located on the edge of Chobe on the Namibian border. The Chobe game drives are the main activity offered by Ngoma - and along with their lodge, these drives are first class. Their guides are super knowledgeable, have eyes … [Read more...]

10 Iconic Landmarks to Visit in Australia

February 15, 2012 by Dave LLeave a Comment

Tourists should look no further than this list of ten iconic landmarks when deciding where to visit during their Australian Holidays. These sites provide a wonderful opportunity to experience all the beauty that the country has to offer. The Sydney Opera House is a world-class musical venue. Situated near the picturesque harbor, this modern wonder evokes the image of a ship under full sail. When completed in 1973, the opera house instantly … [Read more...]

A Bicycle Built for Two

February 13, 2012 by John EdwardsLeave a Comment

While I was house-sitting a 15th-century farmhouse in historical Gascony, with a backyard view of the snow-capped Pyrennees, I decided one bracing morning over a cafe du lait to hire a bike and make a pilgrimage to one of France's oddest pilgrimage sites: "NOTRE DAME DES CYCLISTES." Looking decidedly uncool in my fuzzy Patagonia jacket, Tintin T-shirt, Gap shorts, white athletic socks, and Rockport walking shoes, I pedaled like a madman, … [Read more...]

Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe

February 9, 2012 by DaveLeave a Comment

We are loving the little town of Victoria Falls - US currency is the name of the game here - even the ATM's spit out US dollars. However, unlike the currency in the USA most of the bills here are blackened beyond believe - some bills are just tattered smears of smudge - even though they are only a few years old! One lady in a wheelchair told us to be very careful at night in regards to mosquitoes - she said she's had malaria so many times … [Read more...]

Kruger National Park

February 5, 2012 by DaveLeave a Comment

If your looking for a Big Game Drive, look no further than the huge Kruger National Park in South Africa. Day visits are the cheapest way to see the park but there are a number of lodges within the park boundaries (more expensive then some of the nearby outside of the park accommodations). We took advantage of our early morning arrival time and drove on dirt roads all day on our own "big game drive". We came across three of the "Big Five" - Cape … [Read more...]
