10 Iconic Landmarks to Visit in Australia

February 15, 2012 by Dave LLeave a Comment

Tourists should look no further than this list of ten iconic landmarks when deciding where to visit during their Australian Holidays. These sites provide a wonderful opportunity to experience all the beauty that the country has to offer. The Sydney Opera House is a world-class musical venue. Situated near the picturesque harbor, this modern wonder evokes the image of a ship under full sail. When completed in 1973, the opera house instantly … [Read more...]

A Bicycle Built for Two

February 13, 2012 by John EdwardsLeave a Comment

While I was house-sitting a 15th-century farmhouse in historical Gascony, with a backyard view of the snow-capped Pyrennees, I decided one bracing morning over a cafe du lait to hire a bike and make a pilgrimage to one of France's oddest pilgrimage sites: "NOTRE DAME DES CYCLISTES." Looking decidedly uncool in my fuzzy Patagonia jacket, Tintin T-shirt, Gap shorts, white athletic socks, and Rockport walking shoes, I pedaled like a madman, … [Read more...]

Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe

February 9, 2012 by DaveLeave a Comment

We are loving the little town of Victoria Falls - US currency is the name of the game here - even the ATM's spit out US dollars. However, unlike the currency in the USA most of the bills here are blackened beyond believe - some bills are just tattered smears of smudge - even though they are only a few years old! One lady in a wheelchair told us to be very careful at night in regards to mosquitoes - she said she's had malaria so many times … [Read more...]

Kruger National Park

February 5, 2012 by DaveLeave a Comment

If your looking for a Big Game Drive, look no further than the huge Kruger National Park in South Africa. Day visits are the cheapest way to see the park but there are a number of lodges within the park boundaries (more expensive then some of the nearby outside of the park accommodations). We took advantage of our early morning arrival time and drove on dirt roads all day on our own "big game drive". We came across three of the "Big Five" - Cape … [Read more...]

February 1, 2012 by DaveLeave a Comment

The Rose House Inn is a wonderfully restored luxury Bed & Breakfast located about 8 km from the small town of Fouriesburg in eastern part of the Free State in South Africa. The properties' old stone farmhouse was meticulously restored by innkeepers John and Trish Critchley in 2005/2006. Two stand alone cottages were constructed within the expansive gardens and now serve as the primary guest rooms. The main two ingredients in a stay here are … [Read more...]

Nisela Safari Lodge Swaziland!

January 29, 2012 by Dave2 Comments

We arrived at the Nisela Safari Lodge after crossing one of the smaller southern border post crossings. We immediately found ourselves on dirt roads before reaching the main tarred highway leading north. Swaziland is very small and driving distances are not what we had become accustomed to in the much larger country of South Africa. The Nisela Safari Lodge was the perfect stop for us - reaching it at dusk. At first it appeared somewhat … [Read more...]

Ancient Bushman cave paintings

January 18, 2012 by DaveLeave a Comment

Just returned from a fantastic outing on the horses to see ancient Bushman cave paintings. We rode through expansive fields of mostly corn until we reached a viewpoint overlooking an impressive gorge. From here it was on foot down a very steep rocky trail to the first of the caves - called "echo cave". It was obvious why this cave took its name after we shouted ourselves hoarse, practicing our new found Lesotho words including "dumella" - a … [Read more...]
