Reno, NV – Attractions

by Dave · Leave a Comment

For a town of this size there are a fair number of attractions that are worth seeing. BaseCamp Reno is extremely unique; it is the world's tallest climbing wall (either indoor or outdoor) - in this case it is located outside on the east wall of the Whitney Peak Hotel (tall is a theme here - this hotel is appropriately named for the tallest mountain in the lower 48 states, Mt. Whitney - located in neighboring California). The climbing … [Read more...]

Guadalajara, Mexico – Attractions

by Dave · Leave a Comment

Barranca and Zoologico Guadalajara . Both attractions are located about a 20 minute ride from the center of the city. Zoologico Guadalajara is located on the edge of the Barranca - a 2000+ foot gorge cut deep into the heart of the earth by centuries of river erosion. Slightly similar looking to parts of the Grand Canyon in the United States, minus the bold colors. As one descends to the bottom, the climate becomes more tropical and fruits such … [Read more...]

Hopland, CA – Shopping

by Dave · Leave a Comment

Country Porch Antiques is located in NoHo (north Hopland) at 13201 S. Highway 101 and is run by three women: Patty, Sherri and Linda. A must visit bucket list vintage store, this is a surprising find in such a small town. Located in an old hardware store, their collection of always changing items is spread out over 5,000 square feet. One can spend an hour in this store - easily - browsing through a diverse collection of unique collectibles … [Read more...]

Hopland, CA – Wine Tasting

by Dave · Leave a Comment

Tiny Hopland contains a number of tasting rooms which deliver down to earth experiences for visitors - focusing on wines from Mendocino County. Although there are many wineries in Mendocino County including a number of tasting rooms in Hopland, this area does not have the recognition that perhaps Napa and Sonoma County have obtained over the decades. For the consumer, that is not a bad thing. Mendocino County is producing some stellar wines (the … [Read more...]

This is the second of 4 articles that originally appeared on Dave's Travel Corner about select locations in Mexico. The first one was about Oaxaca City, and the 3rd and 4th articles include Colima City and Guadalajara. A 5th article about Xcalak on the Yucatan Peninsula is also available. The beautiful town of Manzanillo is located in the state of Colima, Mexico. For reference, Manzanilla is located about 4.5 hours south of Puerto Vallarta. … [Read more...]

Monterey, CA – Attractions

by Dave · Leave a Comment

The sites and attractions listed below are not only located within the city of Monterey but also on the Monterey peninsula and vicinity. Cannery Row is a historic waterfront region in the town of Monterey that today has been converted to shops, restaurants and hotels. This used to be home to a number of sardine factories and warehouses serving the fishing area until this industry collapsed in the 1950's. The last cannery in operation was the … [Read more...]

Monterey, CA – Monterey Hotels

by Dave · Leave a Comment

The prices listed below range from the lowest (the off season rates/single person - 1 room) to the highest (holidays and weekends /double person - one room). 'Motel Row' is situated along part of Munras Ave where motels are stacked up like houses, one after the other. These tend to be smaller one or two story older but well maintained properties, (unlike for instance, "Motel Row" in Tahoe's South Shore). Most are not immediately within a short … [Read more...]

Palm Springs, CA – Hikes

by Dave · 2 Comments

Indian Canyons are a must visit during any trip to Palm Springs. These canyons are located just south of downtown Palm Springs. From the 111 (called Palm Canyon Drive) take South Palm Canyon drive past Moorten Botanical Garden and Cactarium, past a number of apartment like complexes until you come to the toll both (marking the entrance to Indian Canyons). If you drive south on Palm Canyon drive, South Palm Canyon drive will simply veer off to … [Read more...]

Oaxaca, Mexico – Monte Alban

by Dave · Leave a Comment

For travelers on short schedules who are not able to visit any of the surrounding towns or other attractions in the Oaxaca area, at least go and see Monte Alban. These historical ruins are among the most impressive in all of Mexico. Most of the ruins have been restored to their original splendor but some of the original structures can also be seen. This site was occupied by the Zapotec Indian tribe between 800 BC and 400 BC. Archaeologists and … [Read more...]
