The Rift Valley Mountain Trek to Petra, Jordan

September 29, 2016 by Dave1 Comment

Day 1 We began our hike under the 2pm sun from Dana Guesthouse, at about 4,300 feet (1300 meters) above sea level. The beating sun shone down on us intensified by the absence of shade and starkness of our rocky surroundings. Fortunately the hike descended down the side of the rugged mountains until we reached the canyon wash. The three of us were the only ones here - perhaps we were slightly nutty considering really very few people make this … [Read more...]

7 Hidden Treasures of Napa Valley

September 17, 2016 by Kevin NelsonLeave a Comment

Despite being one of America’s best-known tourist (and wine drinking) destinations, Napa Valley still offers plenty of discoveries and surprises for travelers. These surprises are everywhere you go and pop up when you least expect it, like finding a Pokemon Go character you did not anticipate seeing. Here are seven hidden treasures of Napa Valley, which you may wish to seek out the next time you go there: The Benny Bufano statues at … [Read more...]

Quiet Rome: underground houses, secret gardens and amazing artworks

September 15, 2016 by Alexandra Eternity Tours1 Comment

If you know where to look, Rome is one of the most peaceful capital cities in the world. Get away from the traffic and the crowds queuing to get into the Vatican Museums, and you’ll discover quiet piazzas, tranquil parks, and museums where the statues outnumber the visitors. I’ve spent the last three years living in Rome, exploring the city on my own or in the company of a tour guide from my company, Through Eternity. Nothing beats exploring … [Read more...]

Tbilisi at First Glance

August 24, 2016 by Dave6 Comments

Our shared van sped across the mountains of northern Armenia seemingly on a race track - passing every vehicle in our path. At speeds like this, the drive was thrilling - and beautiful when we could catch glimpses of the surrounding countryside. Spring time has brought green grass as far as the eye can see interrupted by flowers blooming. This is why I enjoy chasing spring and summer around the planet - with weather such as this. Warm and clear … [Read more...]

Four Unusual Travel Destinations Adventurer Horace Ashton Loved

August 8, 2016 by Libby AtwaterLeave a Comment

Horace Dade Ashton began exploring the world as a teenage cabin boy in the late nineteenth century. His love of the sea and the open ocean led him to explore many parts of the world when travel was difficult. He wrote about his travels, and I’m delighted to present excerpts from them to fellow adventurers. by Libby J. Atwater, coauthor of The Spirit of Villarosa and author of a What Lies Within HAITI Intrigued by what anthropologist … [Read more...]

5 Reasons to Visit Seoul in Spring

August 6, 2016 by Anthony Jury1 Comment

The winter snow is melting and the weather is warming. The flowers are blossoming and the birds are chirping. The skies are clearing and much of Seoul, South Korea can be seen from the top of Bugak Mountain. This can only mean one thing: spring has returned and the 'Soul' of Seoul is at it's best. 1. The Sun comes out As traditional with spring in any part of the world the weather warms and the winter chill becomes a thing of the past. … [Read more...]

Falles: Flowers & Fire

July 11, 2016 by Sarah EatonLeave a Comment

I was lucky enough to visit Valencia during its traditional Falles celebrations; it was a fantastic experience. Falles is a wild five-day fiesta held in commemoration of Saint Joseph.  The celebration is citywide and involves the entire community. Each neighbourhood has an organisation, thecasal faller, that work year long to support the celebrations. Each casal faller produces a construction known as a falla, which is eventually burnt. The … [Read more...]

Notes from Latest Trip to Thailand

July 5, 2016 by Dave7 Comments

I hopped on the skytrain at Victory Monument in Bangkok sporting my "Tintin in Vietnam" shirt and a camera holstered around the neck and was quickly greeted with an old expat standing next to me who said out loud to no one in particular, "there are so many F*(&&ing tourists in town right now". This was the same expat who then pushed out a rather large chubby boy when a seat opened up as both were heading towards one of the empty seats. The young … [Read more...]

Harar, Ethiopia

June 27, 2016 by Sam McManusLeave a Comment

Harar is undoubtedly Ethiopia’s brightest flower. If a jewel, she may be slightly chipped around the edges, though her centre continues to shine with undiminished brilliance. Of course, like most places on the continent – which Paul Theroux encapsulates as ‘a Dark Star’ – everything is a bit messed up. Located on the border of the far eastern Somali region, French-imported blue and white vintage Peugeot taxis cruise beneath Italian-built colonial … [Read more...]
