10 Foods You Have to Try in Kyoto

January 22, 2014 by Jerilyn Kensey4 Comments

Japanese cuisine has a rich and storied history based as much upon the unique culture of the region and nation as it is upon its native foods. For any traveller looking to experience the heart and soul of Japan, the mouth and stomach are an ideal place to start, especially in the city of Kyoto. If you’re looking to travel to and book accommodations in Kyoto, do so with each of your meals in mind, as the foods, dishes and styles of eating in … [Read more...]

Cock-a-Doodle-Don’t, Cockfighting in the Philippines

January 21, 2014 by John Edwards2 Comments

John M. Edwards attends a horrific “cockfight” on Bantayan Island in the Philippines, only to end up wondering what exactly were the ingredients in the national dish of adobo. . . . The roosters swaggered around like Mick and Keith, with dangerously sharp spurs attached to their legs. While the apocalyptic poultry sussed each other out with malice, the excitement began to build. My two new Norwegian backpacker friends snapped photos with … [Read more...]

My Journey to the massive Kata Tjuta stones in Australia

January 20, 2014 by Bob GormanLeave a Comment

Here is my personal journey, which started in Sydney and ended up in me finding the most peaceful yet mind-blowing place on Earth - the Kata Tjuta stones in the Northern Territory. Ticking things off When you go to any country in the world for the first time there are certain places you need to tick off your to-do list. In Australia those places are the Gold Coast in Queensland and of course, Sydney. The Opera House, Bondi Beach, the … [Read more...]

Grand dame hotels are two New England favorites

January 15, 2014 by Paul KandarianLeave a Comment

Elegant, old, stately and welcoming, they are perched high on bluffs overlooking the sea, two New England grand dame hotels with unique identities and charms all their own, especially cozy in the wintry off season when it’s far less crowded. Wentworth by the Sea in New Castle, N.H., and Harbor View Hotel in Edgartown, Martha’s Vineyard, off the coast of Massachusetts, the latter an icon on the Vineyard since 1891, the former since 1874, each … [Read more...]

Biscuits, Booze, and Bodies – 36 Hours in the Florida Keys

January 12, 2014 by Tom BentleyLeave a Comment

Normally, I'm not big on cocktails before 10am. But when we blearily wandered in at 8am to the Blue Heaven, one of Key West’s signature restaurants, that’s what our server suggested. Sitting in the crazy-quilt courtyard, with its rustic artwork and scurrying chickens, looking up at the former bordello on the second-floor, and knocking back some booze seemed in keeping with all things Keys. I opted for the pancakes, which I found just as … [Read more...]

Village Updates, Thailand

January 10, 2014 by Dave3 Comments

We have been infested with pigeons! They are nesting all over our roof - any crevice or corner is fair game. We've moved out a number of nests - found a number of eggs and covered any open areas on the roof with some sort of thorny plant material to discourage future nesting. Still they flock to our roof at all hours of the day and night. The scratching continues even in the early morning. Last night at 3am I was awakened dramatically by a … [Read more...]

Visiting Trinidad in the West Indies: Short Notes

January 10, 2014 by Dave2 Comments

Flights to the Island arrive at POS (not the most politically correct airport code in the world) but it stands for Port of Spain. On a good day (without traffic) it takes about 30 minutes from the airport to downtown. There are a number of car rental companies at the airport (economy car pricing runs from about $40 to $60 US dollar). Car rental companies are also available in downtown Port of Spain and other towns on the island. A few things I … [Read more...]

Emily Kaufman, The Travel Mom

January 4, 2014 by DaveLeave a Comment

I first met Emily at a travel meetup in Los Angeles several years ago - I was impressed by how easily public speaking comes to her and also by the fact that she has been doing something she loves for so long (she started her website way back in 1996). She continues to be the go to person for travel tips as well as a valuable resource for family related travel questions. She is much sought after as a travel expert -regularly making appearances … [Read more...]

A Foodie Walking Tour: Oakland

January 3, 2014 by Preethi ChandrasekharLeave a Comment

I've never been on a foodie walking tour so when I found out about Localite Tours in Oakland, I jumped at the chance to be a part of their tour on a gorgeous Sunday in November. The tour was starting at 2pm so I decided to start my day off with brunch near the Mariott where I was staying for the weekend, as part of my press visit to Oakland. My husband was the one who actually suggested we try nearby Cock-a-Doodle cafe on Washington st. in … [Read more...]

gap-year guidebook 2014, editor Jonathan Barns

January 1, 2014 by DaveLeave a Comment

This is a must have guide for anyone considering a gap year - the largest group of gappers are in their late teens and early 20's but these days those taking a gap year are from all walks of life - and ages including those taking career breaks as well as those who are retired. This guidebook is resource rich and focuses on everything relating to taking a gap year from the preparation, how to fund it, working and volunteering abroad and … [Read more...]
