An afternoon with Åsa Orrmell at Wallåkra Stoneware Factory

July 6, 2013 by DaveLeave a Comment

Wallåkra Stenkärlsfabrik, a stoneware factory, restaurant and garden is located about 30 minutes outside of Helsingborg in Southern Sweden. The property is located within the small village of Vallåkra. Turn off the E4/E6 at the exit Landskrona North (27) and take the road to Vallåkra - look for signs once you are in Vallåkra. This was originally a site where pottery was made with local clay taken from the surrounding land. The original … [Read more...]

Let Les Bons Temps Roules in Red New Orleans

July 5, 2013 by John EdwardsLeave a Comment

John M. Edwards discovers New Orleans unique cuisine to be out of this world, not just Creole and Cajun clichés (“Gumbo” and “Jambalaya”), but also, well, nothing beats an Oyster Poboy! At the legendary Napoleon House in New Orleans, Lousiana, I found myself expectantly dreaming of a dressed “Oyster Poboy,” especially since they had not even one of them on their menus. (Hurricane Katrina had literally wiped out many of the oyster beds way back … [Read more...]

A rickshaw driving through an intersection in Kathmandu, Nepal

We'd been in Nepal's bustling capital city less than 24 hours. In what has become routine upon arriving in a new city, I was up around sunrise eager to wander out and explore the streets of a place that's been a dream of mine for over a decade. Like every other SE Asian country's capital, Kathmandu's streets are chaotic. Chaotic, I said. The roads are awful. Resembling heavily bombed strips of concrete, the streets are extremely fractured and … [Read more...]

Gastronomical wonder at my fingertips

July 3, 2013 by Aradhana MahtaniLeave a Comment

“Chicas! ¡venido a la cena!!!” Quima’s voice travelled through the corridor and my eyes sprung open! Thank goodness - dinner was served. I looked at my watch: 9:23 pm. We’re making progress, at least from the usual 10 o’clock. Sometimes I wondered how my gastric juices could hold out for so long, but maybe I was starting to get accustomed to Spanish standard time. Breakfast at eight AM, a snack at eleven, heavy lunch at two, Tapas or merienda … [Read more...]

Encountering the COTONOU fetish tradition

July 2, 2013 by Kenneth OkpomoLeave a Comment

As a young school boy growing up in the cosmopolitan city of Lagos, the thought of visiting neighboring Benin Republic fiercely fascinated me. In our history class during my secondary school days, we'd been taught about the great Dahomey kingdom which, at its loftiest height, extended to parts of Badagry which is now located in present-day Lagos, Nigeria. Now an Anthropologist whose core research interests lie in cultural evolutions, I was quite … [Read more...]

A Paranormal Papparazzo Stalks the Ghost of Copernicus

July 2, 2013 by John EdwardsLeave a Comment

Time Traveling to Copernicus’s “Crib” in Torun (Poland) John M. Edwards stalks the heretical ghost of Polish astronomer Nicholaus Copernicus back to his hometown: Torun, Poland. Here is a question nobody, not even Steven Hawking (A Brief History of Time) nor Erich von Daniken (Chariots of the Gods), can answer: How large is the universe? How can it be infinite if it is at the same time also “expanding”? I decided the only scientist worth … [Read more...]

Touring Napa Valley: Tasting wine where it’s made

July 2, 2013 by Duncan MarshLeave a Comment

There’s something to be said for having an affordable bottle of rosé on a Friday night – particularly one that is low in calories but still tasty – Blossom Hill is a good example. But to learn more about appreciating wine, the best thing to do is visit the country where it was made – because like olives in Greece, biltong in South Africa or surf and turf in California – it just tastes better! Blossom Hill is made in California (and a bunch of … [Read more...]

A Journey of the Senses

June 28, 2013 by Corina BarrosLeave a Comment

Ears There is a moment of silence just before an announcement. It is that quick pause when the airline ground staff takes a breath—the gap between the crackling of the PA system and the sweet voice with calculated intonation, calling on a passenger: “Paging (insert name). You are needed at gate (insert number).” I am standing inside a store, surrounded by aisles and aisles of eco-friendly school products when I heard a page. I look up … [Read more...]

Palau, Micronesia Has A Host Of Options For Adventure Seekers

June 20, 2013 by DaveLeave a Comment

(Palau, Micronesia --- June 20, 2013) --- Known for its world-class scuba diving conditions, Palau is host to a whole range of options for adventure seekers. In addition to being one of Jacques Cousteau’s favorite dive destinations, this Micronesian paradise is also one of Survivor TV’s Jeff Probst’s favorite places on earth. It’s no wonder…the remote location is free of commerciality and truly a genuine eco-environment, which is not at all … [Read more...]

Car + Vacation, Volvo Factory Tour, Gothenburg Sweden

June 20, 2013 by Dave1 Comment

Recently I was in Sweden to help promote Volvo's Car + Vacation program for overseas car buyers - sponsored by Volvo, Visit Sweden, West Sweden Tourism and Skåne Tourism. This was an appropriate trip for me; at last count, my immediate family has owned six volvos - since my grandfather purchased my mom's first car in 1969. That vehicle was a new 2-door 1968 white Volvo that they spent a grand total of $2,300 at the time. My aunt followed the path … [Read more...]
