Two Lovely Days, Where? Gorgeous Catalina Island, California

March 2, 2017 by Dave2 Comments

On an unusually gloomy day I found myself hanging out in the Commodore lounge on board a Catalina Express ferry with my friend Jacki. I promised her I would not continue to whine about the weather but that was a promise I soon broke. We were on our way to Avalon, the urban gem of Catalina Island. 22 miles from the mainland, in the 'olden days' this ride used take up to 4 hours to cross. On the Catalina Express ferry boat it took us only 60 … [Read more...]

Suzhou, China’s floating city

January 31, 2017 by Abdul RastagarLeave a Comment

Suzhou is often referred to as “the Venice of the East.” In a less ethnocentric world, we would perhaps call Venice “the Suzhou of the West.” The original canal city, Suzhou was already a over a thousand years old when Venice was founded (514 B.C.E. vs. 421 C.E.) It is also significantly larger than Venice, a full order of magnitude more, in fact. Its canal system is indescribably extensive and complex, spreading through a vast network of fields, … [Read more...]

A Shot of Color in the Jungle, Emerald Pool and the Blue Pool – With a Heated Natural Stream Thrown in for Good Measure!

July 25, 2016 by Dave4 Comments

We shot by the Krabi Airport in our tiny rented car - on our way to the Emerald Pool from Phulay Bay. We tried to wake up early and beat the rush at this natural attraction but by the time we were within spitting distance of the pool, it was already nearly 10am. All the locals we talked to highly recommended getting here before 10am as this attraction can quickly fill up with several hundred tourists after 10am. Supposedly vans and buses carrying … [Read more...]

Part Two: Viva Havana!

July 21, 2016 by Jessica Starkschall2 Comments

On day three of the Fathom Impact + Travel cruise on the Adonia, we excitedly woke up to peer outside our portal window and see the vibrant colors of Havana.
