February 24, 2012 by DaveLeave a Comment

Comprising two remote safari camps and a beach retreat in southern Tanzania, The Selous Safari Company ( www.selous.com ) is involved in several partnerships with local communities and conservation organizations, from the preservation of endangered species to the sponsorship of college scholarship programs and "adoption" of schools. The Selous Safari Company's ethos centres on the fact that the future of Africa's wild places ultimately lies in … [Read more...]

The Power & Beauty of Sub Saharan Africa

February 20, 2012 by Dave5 Comments

Upon finalizing my flights to South Africa from Bangkok, I told a good friend who has traveled extensively in Africa that I would kiss the African soil for him. He replied, "Kiss Africa's ground for me, but remember: Africa always wins. No matter how much you try to make sense of all the nonsense, it'll never make sense. Thus Africa wins." Winning or not, the unpredictability of adventure travel in Sub Saharan Africa has always appealed to me … [Read more...]

Chobe National Park

February 19, 2012 by DaveLeave a Comment

Today we visited the interior of Chobe National Park with our intrepid guide Shime - a Botswanan who hails from a small village 7 hours away near the city of Maun. We are staying at the luxurious isolated Ngoma Safari Lodge located on the edge of Chobe on the Namibian border. The Chobe game drives are the main activity offered by Ngoma - and along with their lodge, these drives are first class. Their guides are super knowledgeable, have eyes … [Read more...]

10 Iconic Landmarks to Visit in Australia

February 15, 2012 by Dave LLeave a Comment

Tourists should look no further than this list of ten iconic landmarks when deciding where to visit during their Australian Holidays. These sites provide a wonderful opportunity to experience all the beauty that the country has to offer. The Sydney Opera House is a world-class musical venue. Situated near the picturesque harbor, this modern wonder evokes the image of a ship under full sail. When completed in 1973, the opera house instantly … [Read more...]

Enjoying Victoria Falls…as in the Waterfalls

February 11, 2012 by DaveLeave a Comment

Just like with the Iquazu Falls in South America where you can enjoy views from two countries (Brazil & Argentina), its the same here between Zimbabwe and Zambia. We entered the Falls National Park on the Zimbabwe side and surprisingly had the trails and viewpoints all to ourselves for the better part of 3 hours. These are among the world's greatest waterfalls - you can walk well over a kilometer to see their span. A highlight of a walk here … [Read more...]

Kruger National Park

February 5, 2012 by DaveLeave a Comment

If your looking for a Big Game Drive, look no further than the huge Kruger National Park in South Africa. Day visits are the cheapest way to see the park but there are a number of lodges within the park boundaries (more expensive then some of the nearby outside of the park accommodations). We took advantage of our early morning arrival time and drove on dirt roads all day on our own "big game drive". We came across three of the "Big Five" - Cape … [Read more...]

Hlwane National Park Swaziland

February 3, 2012 by Dave6 Comments

We rode into the National Park today in our little Honda Jazz. Many of the roads are more suited for soft 4wd and the park has erected large dirt burms every 20 meters or so on these roads to stop passenger vehicles from driving. That didn't stop us however! We popped over each burm and drove through mud puddles from recent rains - trying to avoid bottoming out the vehicle and or getting stuck. Getting stuck is a bad thing out here - you are in … [Read more...]

The Rose House Inn – South Africa

February 1, 2012 by DaveLeave a Comment

The Rose House Inn is a wonderfully restored luxury Bed & Breakfast located about 8 km from the small town of Fouriesburg in eastern part of the Free State in South Africa. The properties' old stone farmhouse was meticulously restored by innkeepers John and Trish Critchley in 2005/2006. Two stand alone cottages were constructed within the expansive gardens and now serve as the primary guest rooms. The main two ingredients in a stay here are … [Read more...]

St. John

June 28, 2011 by Paul KandarianLeave a Comment

You think hockey, you think cold. You think St. John in the Caribbean, you think hot. When you combine the two, what do you get? If you're very lucky, a Boston Bruins Stanley Cup championship. That improbable confluence happened for me when I was staying at Kismet on St. John, a gorgeous, five-bedroom villa of Moroccan design high atop Maria's Bluff, between Cruz Bay and Chocolate Hole. I'm a hockey nut in general, and about my Boston … [Read more...]

Travelling with Kids: 10 Best Hostels for Families

June 23, 2011 by DaveLeave a Comment

Offering a practical and affordable place to stay, hostels are becoming increasingly appealing to travelers with children. Family hostels can offer private rooms with en-suite bathrooms and to really keep costs down, the self-catering kitchens are ideal places to prepare packed lunches. Most hostels offer games rooms and children will be happy watching TV in the comfortable lounge areas after a busy day of sightseeing. Hostels often organize free … [Read more...]
