Reaching Paradise, EMBRACE Resort Staniel Cay Bahamas

January 1, 2023 by Dave3 Comments

Dodging clouds, discovering sunshine in between and finding inspiration below I found myself on a tiny 12-seat prop plane on my way from Nassau to Staniel Cay (note that 'cay' is always pronounced as 'key') in the Bahamas. The captain briefly announced our flight plan; 28 minutes to Black Point Cay to drop off a few passengers and then a quick 5-minute flight from there to Staniel Cay. There are not many passengers on board; these planes are … [Read more...]

Looking for Gold in Santa Fe de Antioquia, Colombia

December 1, 2022 by Dave3 Comments

My first introduction to gold mining in Colombia was through stories told years ago by a friend of the family. His father had been mining in the country sometime in the 1920s and hit it rich. He brought the gold back with him to the states by ship. But partway into his journey he began to suffer from yellow fever and probably malaria which left him delirious. His findings were stolen from him on the ship, leaving only a few nuggets in his … [Read more...]

Sips to Remember: My Top 5 Unforgettable Drinks

October 1, 2022 by Dave4 Comments

I have been fortunate to have sampled a lot of alcohol on my travels around the planet, ranging from regional beers, to homemade rice wine, local concoctions in various villages including illegally made home-wine in a remote Iranian dessert village and some truly special beverages that were memorable due to their quality, pedigree and age along with external factors including companions and location. But there are a few drinks I count as being … [Read more...]

October 1, 2022 by DaveLeave a Comment

No visit to Coogee Beach (about 30 minutes from central Sydney by bus, or 15 minutes driving) is complete without a stop at Wylie's, Australia's oldest public baths which date from 1907. When you arrive at the expansive set of sand that forms Coogee's - head directly south along the path on top of the cliffs that overlook the ocean. Soon you will come to the entrance of Wylie's - head down the steps and pay the inexpensive admission at the … [Read more...]

My Highlights of a Visit to Cap Haitien, Haiti

June 1, 2022 by Dave2 Comments

Nonstop flights leave from Miami to Cap Haitien daily (only about an hour and 45 minutes) and the small airport is located only about 20 minutes from town. Arriving in the heat of the day it was a short walk to the entrance to the airport where musicians were jamming some local flavors. A quick breeze through customs (helped by the fact I was the first one off the plane), no luggage to pickup and I was soon outside of the airport where my … [Read more...]
