Seeing the World One Step at a Time

Sydney New Years Fireworks – November 2015

November 1, 2015 by Dave1 Comment

One of the world's first (each year) as well as greatest firework spectacles rings in the new years every January 1st in Sydney Australia. People come from around the world for this magical display of light, noise and crowds. There are always two displays, one held at 9pm, generally shorter and for families and children who do not want to stay up most of the night and then the main display held at the stroke of midnight. Fireworks blast over … [Read more...]

Smell the Eucalyptus Trees

August 8, 2015 by Marie Nieves2 Comments

The Blue Mountains National Park is on the UNESCO Heritage List today and it attracts a large number of visitors to Sydney and New South Wales every year. It is simply refreshing to visit this delightful spot after spendingsome time in a large city of Sydney. Many would say ‘a true impression of Australia’ is what one gets after the Blue Mountains. But why are they called Blue? The answer is that eucalyptus oil evaporating releases the substance … [Read more...]

Blue Mountains, Katoomba Australia – July 2015

July 1, 2015 by DaveLeave a Comment

The Blue Mountains extend for over 400km in length and up to 70km in width. From Sydney public transportation takes about 2 hours to Katoomba (the main jumping off point for day and overnight visitors). Catch the train from Central Station - trains usually leave every hour or less. A visit here can easily be done in a day trip from Sydney (especially if you get an early start, 8-9am). Katoomba is about 100 km west of Sydney. Katoomba is a … [Read more...]

Sydney Opera House, Australia – April 2015

April 1, 2015 by DaveLeave a Comment

There are a select number of instantaneously recognizable buildings in the world - the Sydney Opera house is certainly one of these. Not only is the architecture unique but so is its setting - situated on a small peninsula surrounded by one of the more scenic natural harbors and bayside settings in the world. The iconic tiles of this curved building rise high into the sky - great viewpoints are from parts of the nearby Botanical Garden, from a … [Read more...]

Exploring Tel Aviv, Israel

February 6, 2015 by Dave5 Comments

After a packed 10 days in Qatar and Bahrain I flew over to Israel to meet my brother who was flying in from Italy where he lives. I was initially concerned about coming from Arabic countries straight away to Israel and also receiving an Israeli stamp. In actuality Israel no longer seems to stamp passports, rather they give you a printed ID card which they check when you leave the country. After 10 minutes of solid grilling with random questions, … [Read more...]

Highways Agency Issue Wind Warnings

October 1, 2014 by DaveLeave a Comment

In Britain we are used to being hit with all multitude of bad weathers even when you are least expecting it. The day can often start at icy winter temperatures and then turn into a heat wave by 3pm. It was only a few weeks ago we were worried about the dangers of flooding and, of course, the looming threat of snow and now we are being teased with summer with brighter and warmers days. However, one special danger that presents itself specifically … [Read more...]

The Stranger Side of Travel

August 19, 2014 by Jessica Meddows2 Comments

See dem hills? I live in dem hills… The man pointing at the blue-green hills in question was talking to my mother. He looked like Billy Ray Cyrus -- if Mr. Cyrus had less teeth and a meth-addiction. We were in rural Australia, and this young man with an uncanny resemblance to a junkie version of the popular country singer was doing his best to woo my mother. My teenage sister and I were highly amused.  Over a decade later, we still … [Read more...]

Australia Adventures: A Bed In Bondi Beach

August 5, 2014 by Lauren MachenLeave a Comment

Dreaming of Sydney. Very few of my friends can say that they have traveled across the globe to one of the happiest countries in the world, second only behind Iceland. I'm talking about Australia, and I would have to say that I agree, wholeheartedly with that statement. When I first flew into Sydney, I couldn't help but notice the picturesque view of the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge. It is such a romantic city, yet it's so far away … [Read more...]

Tips for Crossing Australia’s Mighty Nullarbor

June 4, 2014 by Marcin WLeave a Comment

When you think of the classic Australian landscape, the straight, lengthy, and nearly featureless expanse of the Nullarbor Plain may come to mind. If you plan to drive between the states of Western Australia and South Australia on a cross-country voyage, you'll need to pass through this uniquely desolate region. Nullarbor means "no trees" due to the flat monotony of its landscape, which can bring to mind a trip to another planet at times. … [Read more...]
