The Magic of Arashan, Kyrgyzstan

January 10, 2015 by Dave4 Comments

Arashan is a trek that gets under your skin; it is a four to five hour hike up a rutted and rough dirt road alongside a raging river. From Karokal you can take mini bus number 350 - it is about 30 minutes to the drop off point. Or you can take a taxi for about 350 som. You can certainly hike this yourself in the summer - allow 4-5 hours along a very rocky rough dirt road that follows a quickly flowing river for much of the way until the road … [Read more...]

Inside Tracks: Robyn Davidson’s Solo Journey Across the Outback

January 2, 2015 by DaveLeave a Comment

This sizable photo epic by acclaimed author and photographer Rick Smolan details a 1,700 mile trek from Alice Springs (interior Australia) to the ocean along the shores of Western Australia made by Australian Robyn Davidson in 1977. This trek was made mostly solo but with several camels and her dog and at one point an Aboriginal man. "Tracks", a movie about this epic journey was released in 2013. This book contains both photographs from the … [Read more...]

Long Weekend in Bratislava, Slovakia

December 13, 2014 by Dave3 Comments

I had arranged to meet my brother for a long weekend in Bratislava. He was on his way from Verona Italy where he lives and I was on my way from Kyrgyzstan where I had been trekking the past few weeks. We arrived at our floating Botel on the Danube River within 1 minute of each other. Talk about great timing! Ready to imbibe in some alcohol after a several week dry spell we immediately headed to the Grand Cru tasting bar, and ordered several … [Read more...]

Autumn Delight- Verde Canyon Hot Springs

November 28, 2014 by Sharron CalvinLeave a Comment

Finally, time to relax and enjoy the last days of Indian Summer.  Sliding into a rectangular basin full of clean, warm mineral water, my arms and legs titillate happily.  As I lay my head back against the lip of the concrete tub to inhale the fresh, cool autumn air and take in the view of golden leafed oak trees and the Verde river meandering below the canyon.  Undoubtedly, this is Nirvana. This is my first time visiting Verde Canyon and I … [Read more...]

A Guide To California’s Top Natural Beauty Spots

November 19, 2014 by Robert D.Leave a Comment

California is pretty amazingly beautiful, so selecting the top 5 spots was pretty tough, but in the name of being succinct that's what I have done for this post. So here are my favourite few places in California - must see spots for any nature lover. 1. Redwood National Park I just love forests, so this was always going to be on my list. The national park is mostly made of dense forest and beautiful (and huge) redwood trees which are sure to … [Read more...]

The Realities of Adventure Travel Sometimes

November 11, 2014 by Dave2 Comments

I finally arrived in Karakol, Kyrgyzstan on the Eastern edges of Issyk-Kul Lake - ready to head up into the mountains that are always in view from wherever you are in this town. In late summer this town is extremely dusty - washing socks and shorts in a sink left the water brown again and again many times. This town looks like it has seen better days - most of the roads are dirt with lots of rocks and a number of the streets are torn up for … [Read more...]

End of Tian Shan Mountains Trek & Drunks in Minibus

November 3, 2014 by Dave6 Comments

Upon cresting a Tian Shan Mountain pass at 3200 meters above Song Kul Lake we were treated with spectacular views of a valley far below and towering mountains in the distance. The scenery reminded me of parts of Southern California - especially around Bakersfield or around Death Valley. We hiked for several hours, ultimately reaching a small village in the valley. Looking back at the tall mountains it was impressive to see the great distance we … [Read more...]

A Foodie Getaway to Conejo Valley

November 3, 2014 by Jacki UengLeave a Comment

As a native to Southern California and a devoted foodie, I am always on the hunt for quality tasting food and new restaurants to explore. It seems to be an ongoing journey as there are so many neighborhoods within Los Angeles containing a diversity of culinary gems. Turnover rates on restaurants/bars are high as well so it becomes somewhat of a full-time gig to stay updated about the newest hot spots and to continually seek new culinary … [Read more...]

Writing from a Yurt at 3000 Meters in Kyrgyzstan

October 6, 2014 by DaveLeave a Comment

As I write this the temperature is falling dramatically, and the familiar mountain bone chilling air permeates everything. This Kyrgyzstan Yurt is spacious - there are seven of us sprawled out on various mats on the floor. The locals tell us it takes 2-3 hours for four men to setup one Yurt. The insides are colorful with thick canvas and blankets forming the walls. A circular portion of the ceiling opens up for fresh air and sunlight during … [Read more...]
