December 26, 2020 by Teh Chin Liang8 Comments

Spending a day or two soaking in the colonial charm and beauty of George Town is the best way to discover this UNESCO World Heritage site. Visitors will be certainly mesmerized by the vivid and colorful murals and will be tempted by the delicious local foods. However, its character and heritage lie in its diversity of neighborhoods - one should also spend time wandering these streets. Blessing of New House Ceremony by Monks, Thailand

December 1, 2020 by Dave5 Comments

Family and friends began gathering the day before this auspicious date. The music started quietly at first but with the giant speakers waiting to be fully utilized, the sound was quickly turned up. This was not a quiet event but a 2 day chance to party! Dishes, utensils, pots and pans were all brought in from the nearby temple and a number of village elders showed up to help chop, dice, slice and prepare a huge feast. The music carried on … [Read more...]

The Most Unique Vineyard & Winery in the World

November 1, 2020 by Dave2 Comments

In 2002, Oenologue, Sébastien Thépénie responded to an ad to work at a winery in French Polynesia. Wait a minute. There is vineyard and a winery in the middle of the South Pacific Ocean? The answer is yes - on the remote Rangiroa atoll, one of the world's largest coral atolls. And certainly one of the most isolated vineyards on the planet. Today Sébastien oversees the viticulture and winemaking for Domaine Vin de Tahiti. This extremely unique … [Read more...]

A Week in Guadalcanal: Notes from the Solomon Islands

October 1, 2020 by Dave2 Comments

Where are the Solomon Islands? This country is located in the Coral Sea close to Papua New Guinea and about a 3 hour flight north east of Brisbane Australia. Typically not a cheap destination, either flights, hotels, car rental or food (which in our experiences, was basic and bland). Known as the 'hapi isles' for its friendly people, for its marine life, and significant World War II history. The main airport is in Honiara, the capital city. I … [Read more...]

Winchcombe Farm in Warwickshire

September 20, 2020 by Samantha PriestleyLeave a Comment

September had promised to stay fine, and so we headed off again, this time to Warwickshire. I’ve been to Stratford-Upon-Avon before, but other than that I didn’t know this area at all, so a couple of days spent exploring felt like just what we needed. We were staying at Winchcombe Farm, and it became clear pretty soon after arriving that we might not be doing as much exploring as we’d thought. Winchcombe Farm had everything we needed and wanted, … [Read more...]

The Crown & Garter in Berkshire

September 10, 2020 by Samantha PriestleyLeave a Comment

Deep in the Berkshire countryside, through winding narrow lanes, in a small village named Inkpen, there is a 17th century inn called The Crown and Garter. This inn has a deep and sometimes dark history, connected to a nearby gibbet high on a hillside that tells us of a time long ago when our punishments for crimes were brutal and ghoulish. But thankfully that’s all behind us and this is now an area of bright bursting flowers pots and English … [Read more...]

Hands-on Ecuadorian Artisans Are Hands-Down Amazing

August 18, 2020 by Tom Bentley2 Comments

Photo by Alice Bourget When I was around 10, I tagged along to my brother’s Boy Scout meeting, where one activity was making art projects. Given instruction, I sprayed a clothespin with glittery red paint and spelled my name out on the top bar with glued alphabet macaroni. That might be my highest artistic achievement, so perhaps I don’t have a credible basis to judge the quality of the crafts I’ve seen in Ecuador over the past month. But … [Read more...]
