Weekend in Bangkok

December 5, 2012 by DaveLeave a Comment

Bangkok is truly one of the world's great cities - it is a thriving hub of activity both day and night. A world class airport connects to the city via a raised skytrain - which in turn connects to the metro. Bangkok is well known for its horrendous traffic - but with public transportation you can avoid a number of these traffic jams. Budget travelers can head straight to Sukhumvit Road on the skytrain - this is a central area from which to … [Read more...]

December 1, 2012 by DaveLeave a Comment

The Schueberfouer Fun Fair is an annual event (or "Fouer" for short as the Luxembourgish say), held in Luxembourg City starting every August 23rd through early September. At first glance this might be just another carnival or fair, but delving into its history one quickly discovers that this fair has been held annually since the year 1340 - that's 670+ years in a row! For those who are used to going to carnivals and seeing people dressed in their … [Read more...]

Possible Himalayan Trek to Sikkim

November 27, 2012 by Dave2 Comments

I've been to India several times already; earlier this year I secured a 10 year multiple entry visa, for more exploring within this amazing country. We visited Chennai in July for my sister's wedding - as expected, the weather was hot and humid - frequent dips in the pool made the weather more bearable. It was nice to visit Southern India for the first time - although we were missing the mountains. A few years ago we got to experience the … [Read more...]

LACOT October Meetup – Los Angeles

November 2, 2012 by Dave1 Comment

Our latest LACOT meetup was at Hotel Wilshire conveniently located on "Miracle Mile" next to "Museum Row" and minutes from the popular Grove Shopping Center. Capitalizing on the often pleasant weather year round, Hotel Wilshire has turned their roof into the centerpiece of their hotel. Appropriately named, the "Roof on Wilshire" is located here, along with a bar, plenty of views and a small pool. The night was remarkably windy and … [Read more...]

Bruges, Belgium – November 2012

November 1, 2012 by Dave2 Comments

Bruges is charming old world European city that has a lot to offer for the visitor. First and foremost is the medieval architecture; the center of town was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the year 2000. Beautiful old buildings are at the heart of this city and if you visit in the summer you are sure to see colorful flowers dripping from the window sills of many of the buildings. In addition to being a visually appealing city Bruges offers a … [Read more...]

Philadelphia: the City of Ghostly Love

October 30, 2012 by Marianne RuaneLeave a Comment

I was on my way to Philadelphia's Triumph Brewing Company to meet with my boss, Joe Wojie of Grim Philly Twilight Tours, and Laurie Hull, a paranormal investigator from Tri County Paranormal. We were going to discuss and map out the route to our Halloween tour, a hands-on historical ghost hunt. I had been waiting at my South Philly bus stop for over 40 minutes, alone. An older man, tall and skeletal, inappropriately dressed for the sweltering … [Read more...]

Ed Stafford: Adventurer

October 29, 2012 by Dave10 Comments

For more than 2 years Ed walked from western Peru to eastern Brazil - locating the source of the Amazon high in the Andes and then following the entire length of this great river to where it empties in the Atlantic Ocean. What a story! Recently we had a chance to ask Ed about his adventures and this epic trek. Q. Tell us a bit about yourself and where you are from. My name is Ed Stafford. I'm an ex-British Army captain who has spent the … [Read more...]

How to Choose Day Tours

by Dave · 2 Comments

Over the years we have fallen into our share of pitfalls when it comes to arranging day tours on the spot. We haven't had as many problems as we have had with taking taxis (read our article on how to use Taxi's here), but we have identified several things to be aware of. This information is geared to those who have already arrived at their destination and want to go on a day tour. There are always some basics to consider when choosing day … [Read more...]

How to Avoid the Pitfalls of Using a Taxi

by Dave · 13 Comments

Chances are if you have traveled to other countries you have at some point used taxis in your travels. In general, this article is about problematic taxi drivers. It is really hard to put a percentage on the "bad" taxi drivers I've used on trips around the world as each country is different and it is these "bad" drivers who really stand out in your mind. If I had to choose a number, I would say maybe 20-30 percent of the taxi drivers I've used … [Read more...]
