Virginia is for Foodies

June 12, 2013 by Allison TibaldiLeave a Comment

Even if you arrive in Virginia knowing not a soul, don’t be surprised if you leave feeling as if you’ve broken bread and shared drink with good folk who are now friends. That’s the way Virginia strikes me. I come here to eat, drink and contemplate its natural beauty, but am most deeply affected by its people. It’s a truly welcoming place, even to a Northern stranger like me. I recently road- tripped my way through the Commonwealth in search … [Read more...]

Finding the roots of our heritage

May 27, 2013 by Dave3 Comments

I have been fortunate to track down some of my father's heritage - from Luxembourg to Los Angeles. Now it was turn for my mother's side of the family. They come from a very beautiful part of Italy - in the hills along the Italian Riviera. We visited the small town of Casarza Ligure; the "Gallo" name is everywhere which is my mother's maiden name. The homesite of my great Grandfather, Guiseppe Gallo is situated high on a hill above Casarza and … [Read more...]

Driving through Tuscany & Antinori Winery Visit

May 24, 2013 by DaveLeave a Comment

It was hard to leave San Marino - it is such a unique and small country. Interesting museums, eclectic shopping, great views and good food! We opted for the slow drive through Tuscany - covering windy roads up and down the rolling hills, cresting passes and driving through several National Parks. The roads are narrow, steep at times but always through picturesque countryside. This time of year everything is green or in bloom. Spring has … [Read more...]

Enjoying Lake Garda

May 16, 2013 by DaveLeave a Comment

One of the advantages of living in Verona (besides the obvious history and being a picturesque town) is the fact that it is located fairly close to the mountains. We headed out this morning (I would say early but after a late night of walking the streets of Verona we didn't rise until many hours after sunrise)! I had heard about the charms of Lake Garda for a number of years (more frequently now that my brother is living in the area). Lake … [Read more...]

Tedeschi Winery, Verona Italy

May 13, 2013 by Dave4 Comments

I've known Emil Tedeschi for a number of years, owner of Napa Valley's tiny Tedeschi Family Winery, not to be confused with the Tedeschi Winery, Maui - which Emil also co-founded. He has mentioned the Tedeschi Winery in Verona Italy more than a few times. So with my brother living in Verona and describing my upcoming trip to visit him, Emil jumped at the opportunity to come along. Emil has co-piloted a single engine plane - 16 hours from San … [Read more...]

The Rhythm of Prague

May 5, 2013 by Michael BartolomeiLeave a Comment

It’s Friday night. I am home alone and I am bored. Sitting still is not easy for me. I have to work at it. Even a good book requires stops and starts before I can slow myself down. I stop reading to check email or to go to the potraviny (convenience store) downstairs. Eventually the turning of pages becomes all the motion I need and I settle into the comfort of stillness. But, it ain’t easy. My plans to stay in on Friday nights never work out. … [Read more...]
