Big Bear Lake, Calif. June 26, 2013 – Stone Summit Vineyard in Big Bear Lake is now the highest-altitude commercial vineyard and winery in the northern hemisphere at 6,750’ above sea level. This honor had previously gone to Terror Creek Vineyard in Colorado at 6,417’. Snow Summit Vineyard began planting grape vines in May 2012 and has since planted more than 2,000 vines. The growing process is expected to take two or more years before the grapes reach proper maturity levels in order to produce wine on site. In the meantime however, Stone Summit Vineyard is using grapes grown in Napa Valley and California’s central coast to begin bottling wines under its label.
On Thursday, July 4 Stone Summit Vineyard will pour Big Bear’s first-ever commercial wine. The public is invited to sample Stone Summit’s first batch of its Moscato house wine throughout Fourth of July weekend. The pouring takes place at the vineyard’s tasting room called The Wine Room at Wolf Creek Resort located at 41421 Big Bear Blvd.
“We are taking all the necessary steps to produce very special wines at our high-altitude vineyard,” said David Stone, owner of Stone Summi Vineyard. “We just have to wait a couple years for our vines to produce. For the time being however, we are ready to introduce the world to our first house wines, which have been fermenting here on site.”
High-altitude vineyards have a reputation for producing very distinctive aromas and flavors due to UV Rays, temperatures and other climate factors. Stone Summit plans to produce Cabernet, Riesling, Chardonnay and Merlot wines.
In addition to Stone Summit Vineyard’s new house wines The Wine Room at Wolf Creek Resort offers more than 300 different fine wines from around the world to enjoy by the glass, bottle or tasting flights. The Wine Room also serves a variety of craft beers including Stone Summit’s very own collection of draft beers on tap. Tasting room hours at The Wine Room are Thursdays from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays from 12 noon to 10 p.m. and Sundays from 12 noon until 6 p.m. The Wine Room is an elaborate, upscale room that holds up to 75 people. Every weekend live music starts at 6:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and 3 p.m. on Sundays. The Wine Room at Wolf Creek Resort is located at 41421 Big Bear Blvd. For more general information call 909-866-2644 or visit www.wolfcreek-resort.com
