Colima, Mexico
The city of Colima is located within one of the smallest states in the country - also called Colima. The city is located about 90 minutes inland from the more well known coastal town of Manzanillo and is only about a 30 minute drive from the Pacific coastline. Because Colima is at an elevation of between 300 and 550 meters, its climate is cooler then along the coastline. Colima was founded in 1523 and is the third city founded after the … [Read more...]
Colima, Mexico – Attractions
Plaza Principal is the site of several interesting attractions. As I walked through this part of town, I was impressed by the cleanliness of the streets and sidewalks . This plaza is surrounded by the Liberty Garden which contains numerous painted white iron benches (great place to sit down and relax). Various shops and commercial businesses are located on the exterior of the plaza but aren't touristy souvenir type shops, as found in other … [Read more...]

Colima, Mexico – Side Trips
Part of the experience of staying in Colima City is being able to explore the surrounding regions through a variety of day trips. It is the friendliness and simplicity of the locals that has always attracted me to this part of Mexico - along with the fact this is not a heavily touristed part of the country. I love walking through some of the small villages, where the local people rarely if ever see tourists. On warm days in the afternoon sun, I … [Read more...]
Colima, Mexico – Hotels
Hotels in Colima range from dingy to better then average. We initially list the cheapest hotels below, and then some that we recommend for travelers with slightly larger budgets. Hotel La Merced is a clean, cheap and comfortable place to stay. During the hot and humid months, they even have a small "kiddies" pool available on their front lawn. Be sure to look at the rooms first - the best ones are in the back of the hotel. Hotel La Merced is … [Read more...]

We ate or visited the following restaurants: Neveria La Flor de Michoacan is on a corner of the plaza and is open every day from 8am until 10pm. They have a good selection of locally spiced dishes. La Arabica is located at Guerrero 162 near the corner of Obregon street. This small coffee house … [Read more...]

Chamonix, France
Chamonix sits almost in the shadow of western Europe's tallest mountain, Mount Blanc at 15,780 feet in the far southeastern part of France. The town is nestled in the middle of a narrow valley surrounded on both sides by the towering peaks of the Alps. Chamonix is located at about only 3400 feet but it has the feel of being much higher because of the large mountains, glaciers, and snow fields that surround it. The Chamonix Valley stretches … [Read more...]
Chamonix, France – History
During the Paleozoic Era another mountain range stood above what is now the current Mount Blanc. Over the years it eroded and eventually filled in with several seas. Marine sediments have been uncovered by present day geologists at high elevations. Then 40 million years ago a new mountain range formed due to a folding in the earth's crust in this part of the country. Mount Blanc took its present general shape about 15 million years ago as this … [Read more...]
