The Bay of Islands in New Zealand is a stunning destination with a rich history, beautiful landscapes, and various activities.

Today, we will briefly introduce the best things to do in the Bay of Islands; without any rush, we can enjoy many of them and visit most of the area within 4–5 days.

If you have more time to chill in this fantastic New Zealand destination, then the better; you will stay energized by the Bay of Islands!

1. Visit Paihia

  • Paihia is a charming town and a popular base for exploring the Bay of Islands. It offers a range of accommodations, restaurants, and shops. The city has a relaxed atmosphere and is a gateway to many attractions.
  • Time Needed: 1–2 days (Paihia is a central base for exploring the Bay of Islands)

2. Russell

  • Russell is one of the oldest towns in New Zealand and can be reached by ferry from Paihia. Its rich history allows visitors to explore historic sites such as Christ Church and Pompallier Mission. The town has a picturesque waterfront and a peaceful ambiance.
  • Time Needed: Half a day to a full day

3. Cruise the Bay

  • Boat cruises in the Bay of Islands offer a chance to explore the 144 islands, spot marine life like dolphins and whales, and enjoy the stunning coastal scenery. Some cruises also take you to landmarks like the Hole in the Rock.

4. Hole in the Rock

  • The Hole in the Rock is a natural rock formation on Piercy Island. Boat tours take visitors through the Hole, weather permitting, providing a thrilling experience. The island is also known for its birdlife and scenic beauty.
