Los Angeles Athletic Club

October 8, 2010 by Dave4 Comments

We recently stayed at the Los Angeles Athletic Club (a private membership only club but with hotel rooms available to the general public - the first private club in Los Angeles, founded 1880). We stay in a fair amount of National mid to higher end chain hotels and it is very refreshing to find a hotel such as this one with its uniqueness, elegance and history. As soon as we arrived we shot up to the rooftop for some relaxation with a cold one … [Read more...]

Another fantastic trip to LA and the OC!

October 6, 2010 by Dave10 Comments

One of the highlights of this latest trip was re-visiting Universal Studios (and experiencing lighter than normal traffic on the infamous freeways). One new attraction to me was the Ifly experience located in the "citywalk" which leads to the main entrance. This is a "vertical wind tunnel" which for $40 and 2 mins of your time (after waiting in line and undergoing a short instruction session) you can "fly"! Put on a flight suit, goggles and … [Read more...]

Ventura’s The Cliff House Inn: Close to LA but Worlds Away

ventura-surf

We heard the surf pounding the rocks in front of us, though we couldn't see the waves in the inky blackness. Far out on the water's surface a flame flickered and glowered, illuminating the edges of a wooden pier. Festive white lights ran up and around the palm trees next to our table, and I read the menu by the dim light of the candle. It was too beautiful not to sit outside, though my dress-up skirt and cute jacket were obscured by layers of … [Read more...]

Kauai: What’s Blooming on the Garden Isle

October 5, 2010 by DaveLeave a Comment

LIHUE, KAUAI - Kauai's ever-present tropical breezes rustle the trees in its mountains and valleys, adding rich warmth to the lush natural beauty of a place revered as the Garden Island. Inspired by Kauai's beautiful year-round weather, fall is an ideal time of year to experience the rejuvenation of being outdoors and active on an island that readers of one prominent travel publication have deemed to be the very best island in Hawaii. "Kauai … [Read more...]

Touching the Void

October 3, 2010 by DaveLeave a Comment

Touching the Void by Joe Simpson In our opinion, this is probably the most amazing mountaineering survival story of all time. Two climbers set out to climb a 6,000+ meter peak in the Cordillera Huayash range in the heart of the Peruvian Andes. An accident befalls one of the climbers and his partner makes a life or death choice. We've climbed a number of times in this part of the Andes - these are some of the most spectacular mountains in the … [Read more...]

Kite Runner

October 2, 2010 by DaveLeave a Comment

Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini This is a gripping read starting with a boy's (Amir) childhood life in Afghanistan before war tore apart this country. This is fiction but it reads like real life and is interwoven with real life events and places. Eventually the principal character Amir moves to the USA with his father (baba, meaning father). Where else can you find Afghan culture, love and the Berryessa Flea Market in San Jose, California … [Read more...]

TIME Style & Design “Jetsetters”

October 1, 2010 by DaveLeave a Comment

Time.com has interviewed 12 fairly well known jet setters and asked their opinions and tips for jet lag, places they will not revisit again, travel companions, favorite cities, packing tips, airport suggestions and much more. Each "jet setter" also lists some of their favorite travel items. Superstar tennis pro Maria Sharapova says her favorite carry on item is her phone charger, because "...if my bags get lost, I would be more upset about … [Read more...]

Moon Nicaragua

October 1, 2010 by DaveLeave a Comment

Moon Nicaragua by Joshua Berman and Randall Wood This in depth guide book is an excellent resource for travelers to Nicaragua, central America's largest and least populated country. Travel in Nicaragua is generally for Independent travelers - and getting off the tourist beaten path is extremely easy (we know, we've been here before)! Nicaragua is certainly not neighboring Costa Rica in terms of tourist development - but there is just as much … [Read more...]
