Gold Country, CA – Mariposa

by Dave · Leave a Comment

Mariposa is the next major gold mining town if you continue south on Highway 49 from Coulterville. Mariposa county used to be the largest county in California in the 1800's, extending all the way to Los Angeles. However, it is much smaller today. Mariposa, meaning butterfly in Spanish used to be called Logtown. It used to be a central mining town in the area. Today it is centrally located to Yosemite National Park and is a stopover for many … [Read more...]

Gold Country, CA – Murphys

by Dave · Leave a Comment

Murphys is a quaint tourist town that today is much loved all year round by locals and visitor's alike. There is a lot of gold mining history contained on these streets - young Irish immigrants (and brothers) John and Daniel Murphy were among the early California gold miners and struck it rich near here in 1848 taking out an estimated 2 million dollars in gold ore from the nearby diggings. This was one of California's richest most concentrated … [Read more...]

Gold Country, CA – Sonora

by Dave · Leave a Comment

Sonora (the queen of the southern mines) is the heart of the southern gold mining towns. Sonora was first established by miners from Sonora, Mexico. This town was important during the mining days and remains so even today. Sonora was established during 1848 and has been the county seat of Tuolumne since 1950. Even though Sonora was established in 1848 people have traveled through and settled here since the late 1820's. During its early mining … [Read more...]

Gold Country, CA – Twain Harte

by Dave · Leave a Comment

Twain Harte is located about 20 or so minutes east of Sonora two miles off of Highway 108. This is a nice place to stop for either lunch or a relaxing break on your way to Sonora Pass as there are a surprising number of small restaurants in and around the 'center' of town. In the mood for mini golf? A seasonable miniature golf course is located near the center of town. Very family friendly. The feel here is different then some of the … [Read more...]

Gold Country, CA – More Info

by Dave · Leave a Comment

For a great picture and caption book on the northern and southern California gold region I highly recommend "California's Gold Rush Country", a book that highlights the gold country from 1848 to 1998. This is not a book that provides much travel information. Leslie Kelley is the author and photographer. He took three years to travel and do research for this book. The book … [Read more...]

Spokane, WA

by Dave · 1 Comment

These are the streets that Bing Crosby used to walk. Tall brick buildings still stand silently, some looking as new as when they were built, some left to slowly crumble. Imagine yourself in a city that still holds onto its heritage yet at the same time revels in its future. This appreciation of the past but respect for the future can be seen in the many restored buildings located downtown. These buildings still retain their original feel, but are … [Read more...]

Spokane, WA – The Trip

by Dave · Leave a Comment

This is a general outline of a recent trip to Spokane, including parts of Idaho and Montana. The total trip took 10 days and was in early August. The best time for warmer weather and more comfortable conditions is between mid July and mid August. Because gold mining was one of the main reasons for the trip several days below show "gold mining" as the main activity. We rented a car from Thrifty at the Spokane Airport and made a circle covering … [Read more...]
