Cancun, Mexico (September 27, 2013) – Holbox, a small island off the coast of Cancun, will host the Second Annual Holbox Gastronomic Festival October 16 – 20, celebrating the region’s top chefs and traditional local fare. In addition, the Holbox Gastronomic Festival will welcome renowned Mexican Chefs Ricardo Munoz and Roberto Solis, among others, to showcase their best dishes.
Organized by the Island of Holbox Restaurant Association, the Festival will draw locals and tourists to the small Mexican Caribbean island located just northwest of Cancun. Guests can admire the natural scenery of Holbox as they stroll down the streets lined with picturesque Caribbean-style houses and sample the great restaurants and local, mouthwatering cuisine.
Just 26 miles long and separated from the mainland of Mexico by a shallow lagoon, Holbox is considered to have some of the best restaurants serving traditional island dishes in a rustic setting. During the festival, chefs from the island and other parts of Mexico will prepare regional and international fare for attendees. Chefs from Holbox’s restaurants will participate in the event and will showcase their tempting and unique specialty dishes, which include fresh seafood like lobster pizza and stuffed squid.
Special guests include Marco Beteta, Mexican artist, entrepreneur and creator of spa and restaurant guides in Mexico; Deby Beard, writer and wine and food enthusiast; Chef Roberto Solis, owner of Nectar Food & Wine in Merida; and Chef Ricardo Munoz, named “Prophet and preserver of culinary tradition” by TIME Magazine and considered one of the top chefs in Mexico and Latin America.
Visitors can purchase a one-day festival bracelet at the reception desk of Hotel Arenas in Isla Holbox for approximately $30 ($350 Mexican Pesos), which includes all festival activities for that day such as tastings at the beach and an international blues, tango and jazz night. Several island hotels are offering special packages that include everything from hotel stays, festival tickets, transportation, spa treatments, excursions and more, and are available for purchase. Participating Holbox hotels include: Hotel Casa Sandra, Hotel La Casa de las Tortugas, Hotel Las Nubes, Hotel Villas Flamingos, Hotel Villas Paraiso del Mar, La Palapa, Hotel Arenas, Casa Barbara, Takiwara, Casa Lupita and Hotel Amaite.
The festival will also consist of food, wine and mezcal tastings, dinners prepared by Chef Munoz, Chef Solis and 16 local chefs, live entertainment and a golf cart parade through the streets of Holbox.
In addition to the Holbox Gastronomic Festival, Cancun also hosts the Cancun-Riviera Maya Wine & Food Festival, which will celebrate its third installment March 13 – 16, 2014. The destination is also home to new high-end dining establishments like Ramona at NIZUC Resort & Spa and Tempo by Martin Berasategui at Paradisus Cancun. As an up and coming culinary destination, Cancun continuously widens its reach into world-renowned gastronomy and at the same time, holds on to local and regional flavors and techniques that span across Yucatecan cuisine to embrace local Mexican traditions.
