Trailing the Tiger

February 5, 2006 by Roozbeh GazdarLeave a Comment

So there are destinations and destinations, each offering their distinct USPs. Hot attractions that draw tourists seeking an 'experience; to carry home a trophy to substantiate a battery of travel yarns. But in this craze for acquiring the best seller, our jetsetter often overlooks the finer details - colours that give a place meaning and significance. After all isn't the great thing about travel, the joy of savouring an authentic experience in … [Read more...]

Safari West, CA

by Dave · Leave a Comment

A "little piece" of Africa is available to the general public in Sonoma County, about 1 hour 20 minutes north of San Francisco. Safari West is a gem of a nature preserve located only about 20 minutes from Santa Rosa off of Mark West Springs Road at the corner of Franz Valley Road (3115 Porter Creek Road). The park is about 15 minutes from Calistoga in the northern part of the Napa Valley. Visiting Napa for some wine tasting? Need a break? Come … [Read more...]

Safari West, CA – The Safari

by Dave · Leave a Comment

Soon after pulling into the entrance of Safari West we hopped into a waiting 1952 Dodge Power Wagon Jeep and we were greeted by a young fellow in the driver's seat named Billy. Billy was born and raised in South Africa. His father was a bush pilot and Billy grew up around wild animals all of his life. He would be our driver and guide for the 2.5-hour tour. His background and insights into the animals and their behaviors was invaluable. The … [Read more...]

Safari West, CA – Trading Post

by Dave · Leave a Comment

The Trading Post is an excellent art gallery located behind the main office. Be sure to browse among the artwork, woodcarvings and pottery imported from Africa. The highlight of this gallery is the collection of masks located upstairs. In addition to the gallery, dining is by reservation at the Savannah Cafe, which serves African themed meals. … [Read more...]

Bangkok, Thailand – Museums

by Dave · 8 Comments

Bangkok is many things to many people, but it is not necessarily a museum town. A number of the museums are fairly dated and fail to provide a fun, educational, modern and engaging atmosphere. However with that said, there are still plenty of good museums to keep one occupied for at least a week if not longer including some rather intriguing, esoteric and hidden away ones. We have visited and reviewed the following 50+ museums in Bangkok. And … [Read more...]

Catalina, CA – Attractions

Airport in the Sky One has to be creative when there is a not a lot of flat space on the island. Such was the case when building the runway for the Airport in the Sky - two mountaintops were flattened and then the resulting debris was pushed together to create a flat 3,000+ foot runway. Not open to commercial aircraft, the airport services private planes and handles the mail delivery for the island. Sometimes an old DC-3 World War II vintage … [Read more...]

Key West, FL – Restaurants

by Dave · 1 Comment

To begin this section I would like to offer one of the more popular recipes for Key Lime Pie. This well-known pie is a specialty dessert of the Florida Keys. This particular recipe was taken from Key Kookin by the late great Glad Whitley. Ingredients: 4 eggs (separated) 1 cup sugar 1 tablespoon sugar 1 tablespoon gelatin (in 1/2 cup ice water) 1 half cup Key lime juice 1 half teaspoon salt Beat egg yolks until thick, add 1/2 cup … [Read more...]

Reno, NV – Attractions

by Dave · Leave a Comment

For a town of this size there are a fair number of attractions that are worth seeing. BaseCamp Reno is extremely unique; it is the world's tallest climbing wall (either indoor or outdoor) - in this case it is located outside on the east wall of the Whitney Peak Hotel (tall is a theme here - this hotel is appropriately named for the tallest mountain in the lower 48 states, Mt. Whitney - located in neighboring California). The climbing … [Read more...]
