This is Africa

June 21, 2017 by Dave19 Comments

We left Varela on the coast in Guinea Bissau at 5am - determined to make it back to Dakar in time for our 145am flight that evening. No small feat since it took us more then 20 hours to get to Varela from Dakar. Unfortunately the border between Guinea Bissau and Senegal is not open all night; in the morning it opens at 8am. We arrived at the border at 630am - avoiding all the corrupt police on the road as they had not yet reached their posts. … [Read more...]

Moments on the Road, Guinea Bissau

June 6, 2017 by Dave9 Comments

Look once and you see the dustiness of West Africa - it all blends together - the orange grime that covers everything in the dry season and the equally faded and dirty skies above. Sahel + Harmattan. Look closer and the details transition into focus. Trash everywhere - most of it is plastic crap. Notice the stillness; rusted motorbikes half buried in the sand will never run again. A truck's cabin has been gutted by people and by the weather. … [Read more...]

A book for cycling enthusiasts, a book for recreational riders and a book to inspire those to travel and combine the trip with some time on a bike. Praise the Sun

For many, yoga is a daily practice. It is a ritual they undertake in a class as part of a group, alone in the privacy of their home or, if they are very lucky, outside communing with nature. Performing the Surya Namaskar on a hilltop in the Serengeti was an unexpected, but inspired move by Demi Piriya who is a yogini who grew up in Thailand, but currently resides in United States. This is the story of how Demi found spiritual inspiration on her … [Read more...]

Left Beyond the Horizon by Christopher Many

April 1, 2017 by DaveLeave a Comment

Most books we receive to review are quickly consumed - easy travel reads. This book is different. It reads at a snail's pace providing insights and food for the reader to digest slowly. It is written as it was traveled - to be absorbed over time rather than finished in a day. Author Many is no stranger to long road trips; at the time this book was first published in Germany in 2011 he had been on the road for nearly 15 years. Taking him on … [Read more...]

Is South Africa Safe for Tourists?

February 28, 2017 by Anthea Adams1 Comment

South Africa has received its fair share of negative media coverage for its high crime rate. And so it comes as no surprise that many have advised that the country isn’t safe for tourists. With statistics placing South Africa on the list of top ten countries with the highest crime rates, the bad reputation has strengthened. While murder and rape remain a prominent issue in South Africa, a majority of the crimes occur amongst people who … [Read more...]

Citadelle LaFerrière – or how to keep the French out of Haiti

February 18, 2017 by Abdul RastagarLeave a Comment

I’ve been in Haiti for a few days now, trying to get a better understanding of life in one of the poorest nations on earth (see my related articles on Port au Prince and Cap Haitien.) By any measure, it has an arduous history. Haiti bears the misfortune of being the island that Columbus decided to claim and colonize first. The native Taino indians were promptly enslaved and sent off into gold mines to enrich the coffers of Queen Isabella of … [Read more...]

February 12, 2017 by Dave8 Comments

Getting the jump on another year and perhaps seo considering its only 2017 here in Thailand, the last time I checked - here are a few of our favorite travel blogs for 2017 and 2018.
