Reno, NV

by Dave · 3 Comments

Long billed as the "biggest little city in the world" - today's population is over 250,000 and the city is somewhat spread out now but for a city of this size, it still perhaps feels bigger then the actual population. Reno is located in the high desert east of the Sierra Nevada Mountains north and slightly east of the great Lake Tahoe. Reno offers numerous non stop gambling opportunities 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The city boasts a … [Read more...]

Reno, NV – Casinos

by Dave · Leave a Comment

For those serious gamblers, for those who perhaps just dabble in gambling, and for those who don't gamble but want to see the action - Reno offers a pleasing diversity of casinos. And most of these casinos feature a large hotel, often in a separate building from the casino (sometimes connected by walkways). The majority of the casinos feature doors that must be pushed open - and once you push through a second set of doors, you are deposited into … [Read more...]

Reno, NV – Lodging

by Dave · 3 Comments

Accommodation in Reno is diverse and varied from the larger casinos to many vintage "one-star" motels - usually one or two stories and often in a state of various decay. Reno is lacking in boutique hotels. Prices for hotel rooms tend to be fairly affordable, perhaps somewhat subsidized or supported by the gambling industry. All Phone Numbers are in the 775 area code. Please also visit our Reno Casino page for additional information about … [Read more...]

Guadalajara, Mexico

by Dave · 2 Comments

This is the 3rd in a series of five travel articles written about select locations in Mexico. These select locations are Oaxaca, Manzanillo, Guadalajara, and Colima. More recently we have written an article on Xcalak, located in the Yucatan Peninsula, near the border of Belize. Guadalajara has approximately 1.5 million residents, with estimates of up to 4.5 million including the suburbs. Even with such a sizable population, I did not get the … [Read more...]

Guadalajara, Mexico – Lake Chapala

by Dave · Leave a Comment

The town of Chapala is located on the shores of Mexico's largest freshwater lake, Lake Chapala. This lake is 53 miles long and 17 miles wide. Walking to the shoreline one will see a type of weed (water hyacinth) that has proved to be a voracious pest in recent years. This weed is multiplying rapidly and clogging waterways of the lake. Unfortunately this weed has gained a foothold due to the dropping water levels of the lake, because of the … [Read more...]

Guadalajara, Mexico – Hotels

by Dave · Leave a Comment

Because Guadalajara is so spread out geographically, driving distances between hotels can be as much as 30+ minutes. Note: some of these hotels are located in Tlaquepaque, an artisan based suburb about 20 minutes from downtown Guadalajara. We have visited, stayed or received recommendations for most of the ones listed below. Readers have also emailed us their comments about some of these hotels and in some cases have suggested additional … [Read more...]

Manzanillo, Mexico – Restaurants

by Dave · 3 Comments

Most of the fancier restaurants are located on or quite close to beaches. There is also a good selection of restaurants in or near the center of town surrounding the primary zocalo (public square). Most of the good restaurants will serve bottled water instead of tap water. However, I recommend asking if they serve bottled water at all restaurants you eat at. Or simply drink beer. Restaurant Bar Roca del Mar is located on the east side of … [Read more...]

Manzanillo, Mexico – Hotels

by Dave · Leave a Comment

There are many hotels in Manzanillo. Most of the hotels listed below are located very close, if not actually on the beach. All hotels listed below are in the (333) code unless otherwise specified. Lastly, the prices tend to be generally higher during the busy season - from December to April. Dave is always looking for hotel recommendations in Manzanillo across a diversity of budgets - if you have any comments regarding the hotels listed below … [Read more...]

Monterey, CA

by Dave · 2 Comments

Monterey (population approximately 29,000) is located roughly 2 hours south of San Francisco. This beautiful historic town takes full advantage of its location on the edge of the Pacific Ocean with attractions such as Fisherman's Wharf, Cannery Row, and the ever popular Monterey Bay Aquarium. However, there are more attractions in the entire Monterey Bay area then just those in the town of Monterey. Additional highlights include the scenic 17 … [Read more...]
