In every inspiring natural creation there is a realism that speaks to you. In every moment on a mountain you find it more and more. You discover yourself in ways not possible through other means. This stays with you and guides you for the rest of your life. May everyone have this chance at least once. ~ Dave This guide is a review of a climb by Dave of Mt. Kilimanjaro, Tanzania. This article focuses solely on the climb with little other … [Read more...]

Mammoth, CA – Restaurants

by Dave · Leave a Comment

On the whole, we find the restaurants in Mammoth to be quite expensive and the food generally average. This is not to say that there aren't some good restaurants - and the food scene has generally improved in the past 10 or so years. Pick up a copy of Mammoth Menus, which is available at Vons or at some of the restaurants. This is a very informative guide to dining in the Mammoth area. Menus and prices are included. Prices subject to change … [Read more...]

by Dave · Leave a Comment

The following attractions are in or around the town of Mt. Shasta - or slightly further afield, but all are in Siskiyou County. Castle Crags are well worth a visit. Besides Mt. Shasta, the crags are what most people remember about their drive north on Interstate 5. These sharp rock formations rise in elevation from 2000 feet to over 6500 feet. There are over 27 miles of developed hiking trails in the Castle Crags area. Pull into the main … [Read more...]

Angels Camp is the town that inspired the great Mark Twain to write his short story, "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County". This book was his first success. This annual Jumping Frog Jubilee began in 1928 and continues today from Thursday through Sunday the third week of May. A Frog Hop Walk of Fame is located along South Main Street (Highway 49) and bronze plaques embedded in the sidewalks feature the winning frog names from some 85+ … [Read more...]

Sonora (the queen of the southern mines) is the heart of the southern gold mining towns. Sonora was first established by miners from Sonora, Mexico. This town was important during the mining days and remains so even today. Sonora was established during 1848 and has been the county seat of Tuolumne since 1950. Even though Sonora was established in 1848 people have traveled through and settled here since the late 1820's. During its early mining … [Read more...]

San Francisco, CA – Neighborhoods

Castro District is centered along Castro Street (just off of Market Street) and is one of the original gay neighborhoods in the entire country. It retains its unique heritage and gay community - rainbow flags fly proudly above the sidewalks including the tallest one at the corner of Market, Castro and 17th Streets. The world's second GLBT History Museum opened here in 2010. Harvey Milk is a name synonymous with this district - a former gay … [Read more...]

San Francisco, CA – Shopping

by Dave · Leave a Comment

There are an incredible array of shopping centers, malls, and shopping districts in San Francisco. There are vast tourist shopping areas selling everything from electronic equipment to post cards. When I play tourist south of Union square, Chinatown, and south of Market street, I am often amazed by the great number of shops all selling similar items. As you walk through these shopping sections soon every store almost looks the same. You will … [Read more...]

Vancouver, Canada – Attractions

Bloedel Conservatory is located on a hill overlooking the entire city of Vancouver. The observatory is surrounded by lush gardens. This is a great spot to bring the family for a picnic lunch. The observatory contains a diverse garden of tropical plants and birds. During the dead of the winter months this can be an enjoyable outing to escape the frigid temperatures. For example, one can come up here and dream they are in Costa Rica or some other … [Read more...]
