May 1, 2003 by DaveLeave a Comment

The Clark Center for Japanese Art, located in Hanford California, contains a high quality collection of Japanese art and cultural objects. Over 1700 objects are contained within this museum. The collection was started in the 1950's by the husband wife team of Willard & Elizabeth Clark but has only been open to the public since 1995. Hanging scrolls, ancient Buddhist sculptures and Japanese ceramics and bamboo are the highlights of their … [Read more...]

Schulz Museum

by Dave · Leave a Comment

The following is an article that first appeared in the April 2003 issue of Upbeat Times, a regional newspaper which is published once a month in Sonoma County, CA. I had just arrived at the Charles M. Schulz Museum and Research Center and was waiting in the front lobby when a young girl skipped in and the first excited words out of her mouth were "Mom, look its Snoopy!" I immediately saw what attracted her attention. On the wall were several … [Read more...]

by Dave · 51 Comments

Bangkok, Thailand – Temples & Shrines

by Dave · Leave a Comment

Bangkok is home to hundreds of gleaming golden temples - many of which are centered around the old part of town and along the banks of the Chao Praya River or along other waterways within the city. Buddhists believe that monks should be ordained on or near water. Some are more memorable than others for a variety of reasons (size, architecture, unique artifacts, unique Buddha statues, location etc). Some of our favorites are indicated by the … [Read more...]

Bangkok, Thailand – Shopping

by Dave · 3 Comments

Major shopping districts in Bangkok include parts of the Suhumvit and Silom areas of Bangkok. Shopping here can be a serious affair for some people - with a number of patrons getting decked out in their finest. And of course there are always a number of dressed down phone toting tourists (looking for the ideal selfie spot), expats and those people watching. It is not hard to shop till you drop in this town - although you won't be dropping from … [Read more...]

Lamu, Kenya – Shopping

by Dave · Leave a Comment

Gallery Baraka is an excellent gallery selling items from West Africa as well as some crafts (especially Maasai beadwork) created in other parts of Kenya. They also sell a few locally made wood carvings. The craftsmanship on some of the pieces on display is incredible. Small wood carvings, pottery, jewelry and other artisan work fill the walls and tables inside. This is the best gallery that I found in Lamu. They are located on the main … [Read more...]

Lamu, Kenya – Conclusion

by Dave · Leave a Comment

The last visual scene I have of Lamu is on a dhow heading for Manda Island. I glanced back over the choppy waters at the small town concentrated along the waterfront. The coral white-washed buildings with their distinctive pillared round arches were a stark contrast to the dark water and clouds overhead. Leaving by boat leaves one with a sense of longing - a lingering sadness at leaving and not having spent enough time here. Small wooden dhows … [Read more...]
