Select Highlights of South East Europe

August 1, 2011 by DaveLeave a Comment

These are some of the highlights of visiting select locations in Croatia, Hungary, Montenegro and Serbia. This trip was totally unscripted and unplanned. All we had were our plane tickets to Europe. We used public transportation to get around - buses, trains, city trams and metros where available. Note that while distances on the map don't look that far from each other especially along the Dalmatian Coast, the roads are narrow, windy and very … [Read more...]

Kotor Montenegro

July 18, 2011 by Dave3 Comments

We are chilling high above the scenic town of Kotor (rhymes with Motor) situated in this amazing, southern most Fjord in all of Europe. We are staying with a family in their home in the hills above the main part of town. The city is lit up, the breeze warm, and the musty earthy smell of the surrounding fig trees all around us. We are also enjoying a late harvest dessert wine from Oremus, one of Hungary's finest wineries in the Tokaj region. Not … [Read more...]

Blundering in the Balkans

July 2, 2010 by Tim HillLeave a Comment

The sweat dripped down my face as I gyrated to the throbbing techno trying to keep up with a six-foot Serbian bombshell that had taken a keen interest in me, or at least my obvious American appearance. We walked out to the deck of the club, docked on the banks of the river Danube in downtown Belgrade to escape the heat of the nightclub and catch a breath of fresh air. As I took a sip of Jelen Pivo, the standard Serbian beer, my mind was fighting … [Read more...]

Booking a budget holiday can be a challenge during the summer months, when the costs of hotel rates, flights and package holidays soar - and that's before you've even begun to consider the cost of food and sight-seeing when you're out there! Luckily there is a way to cut back with sacrificing your fun in the sun. Choose a beach hostel over an expensive hotel and you'll get much more for your money. Love in Venice for Less

July 3, 2008 by HostelBookersLeave a Comment

Enjoying a Romantic Break on a Budget Venice is, without a doubt, one of the world's legendary romantic destinations. But the hordes of lovers traveling to the city each year have also transformed it into a hotspot for over-priced restaurants and hotels. However, beneath the veneer of tourist traps and expensive rates, Venice retains its unique charm and, with a few money-savvy decisions, can be a city of romantic possibility even for a … [Read more...]

Exploring Havana: Queen of the Caribbean

May 18, 2008 by Habeeb SalloumLeave a Comment

To fully discover Havana both old and new, we decided to explore the city in two stages. In the morning, we would explore the new part by auto and in the afternoon roam through the old section by foot. I had visited Havana numerous times before, but I had not truly discovered the city. This time it was to be different. We began our exploration of Havana by car in the Miramar district, with its foreign embassies and plush hotels, in the new … [Read more...]

Trip to the Rhine in Germany

We flew British Airways from San Francisco Int. Airport, to Heathrow Airport, and then into Frankfurt Airport. Heathrow has a special assistance lounge. Ask for assistance when leaving your plane, and they will take you to the lounge. You give them your boarding pass and let them know what sort of help you need, and when the time comes for you to board your departing flight, they either let you know that someone will meet you at the gate with an … [Read more...]

Exploring the World as Paying Crew

October 12, 2006 by John ThompsonLeave a Comment

Unlike chartering which requires experience, and that you start and finish from a charter base, you usually don't need any sailing experience and you have many more choices of where in the world your trip will start. This is exactly what I did during August 2006. I had briefly tried the "paying crew" option in Thailand several years ago, and after having a great experience there, was ready to try it again. Since I would be traveling alone on … [Read more...]
