The art of Damasquinado in Toledo Spain

April 25, 2017 by Barb HarmonLeave a Comment

Damasquinado (Toledo Craft) can be found in many shops in Toledo Spain. While in Toledo, we were “pulled” (seduced) into a workshop where the ancient craft of Damascene is practised. We literally had just checked into our hotel, dropped our bags in the room and headed out to grab a bite to eat. We walked a few steps when I felt a few raindrops hit my head. Of course the umbrellas were in our room but my husband volunteered (aka- was forced) to … [Read more...]

Dreaming of Montana

March 22, 2017 by Dave3 Comments

It has been far to long since I have been to Montana. My father and I visited some 20 years ago - a road trip in the spirit of gold mining but in reality became a father-son bonding trip and a chance to explore the great outdoors of the Western USA. Most of our time in Montana was spent in the north and western part of the state with a mix of time spent both in small cities and the outdoors. We also visited Helena and Billings but those were … [Read more...]

Lost to the charm of Seville

February 24, 2017 by Teh Chin Liang2 Comments

Sometimes it is better to travel and be surprised by a destination rather then trying to do research ahead of time. My time in Seville has given me a new perspective about this beautiful part of Spain and my trip here has been without any preconceived expectations. Previously I had only heard of Sevilla through an opera that was based on a story about a barber - other than this fragment of knowledge I knew nothing about this charming little town … [Read more...]

Chasing Adventure in the Dominican Republic

February 14, 2017 by Preethi Chandrasekhar2 Comments

I'm standing at the edge of a mountain, taking in the gorgeous city sprawled below me.  I hear the commands "Run, run!" The body instinctively resists but I take a leap of faith and go. I'm up in the air before I even know it, the parachute lifting me up and away.  And just like that I'm paragliding in Jarabacoa, Dominican Republic. The name Dominican Republic more often than not stirs up images of a blue green Caribbean sea, and miles and … [Read more...]

4 Adventures for Thrill-Seekers in the Dominican Republic

January 23, 2017 by Karrie M. Rockwell2 Comments

Woman holding a fish

Located in the heart of the Caribbean, the Dominican Republic was the first place to be reached by Christopher Columbus in 1492 - making it the oldest country of the Americas. Surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean to the north and the Caribbean Sea to the south, the Dominican Republic’s 18,704 sq. miles consist of rain forest, savannah and highlands. While the island is mostly known for its beaches, resorts and golf courses it also boasts the … [Read more...]

Visiting the best of Northern Vietnam

Visiting the best of Northern Vietnam

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live with in a rural community, deep in the northern mountains of Vietnam?   Eating local delicacies and drinking happy water into the later hours of the night?   Away from the bustling noise of the city and all the tourism?   Waking up with the farmers as the sun comes up, hearing the sound of roosters singing in the valleys?   I always … [Read more...]

The Doll Lady of Wisconsin

November 18, 2016 by Sharon Nadja Zajdman3 Comments

On the first anniversary of my mother’s passing, a letter was forwarded to me from the Holocaust Center. My mother had been prominent in Holocaust Education. A woman in Wisconsin was writing a book and looking for my mother to provide her with background information.   The Center didn’t know what to do with the letter, so they forwarded it to me. Enclosed were photographs of my mother, taken in her home. I called the woman in Wisconsin … [Read more...]

October 17, 2016 by Habeeb SalloumLeave a Comment

By Habeeb Salloum and Muna Salloum After spending a few days in Sydney, Cape Breton Island’s largest city, we felt that it was time to discover why Nova Scotia declares Cape Breton Island, ‘the masterpiece where your heart will never leave’.
