Any phone numbers listed below are in the (775) area code. Prices mentioned are for dinner unless otherwise noted. Note that there casino's often contain multiple restaurants within their confines. The ones listed below are simply a few restaurants out of the overall Reno dining scene.     Restaurants Archie's is located across from the University of Nevada Reno and as a result sees a good crowd of college students at … [Read more...]

Guadalajara, Mexico

by Dave · 2 Comments

This is the 3rd in a series of five travel articles written about select locations in Mexico. These select locations are Oaxaca, Manzanillo, Guadalajara, and Colima. More recently we have written an article on Xcalak, located in the Yucatan Peninsula, near the border of Belize. Guadalajara has approximately 1.5 million residents, with estimates of up to 4.5 million including the suburbs. Even with such a sizable population, I did not get the … [Read more...]

Guadalajara, Mexico – Plaza Tapatia

by Dave · Leave a Comment

This prominent and massive plaza located along Avenida Hidalgo is one of only a few plazas in Mexico with a footprint that extends in all four directions (similar to the shape of a thick cross). A cathedral is located in the center of the plaza. Plaza Tapatia is seven blocks long with Teatro Degollado at the west end and Cabanas Cultural Institute at the east end. Numerous shops and stores surround the plaza - anchoring all of its sides. This … [Read more...]

Guadalajara, Mexico – Tlaquepaque

by Dave · 1 Comment

Located about 20 minutes by car from the center of Guadalajara, Tlaquepaque offers some of Mexico's best shopping (this used to be a suburb of the city, but with urban sprawl has been incorporated into the city limits). Most of the stores sell crafts made by local artists. A number specialize in antiques. During our visit we saw some large antiquities being sold for $100,000 or more USD. This town features a number of excellent silver and … [Read more...]

Guadalajara, Mexico – Lake Chapala

by Dave · Leave a Comment

The town of Chapala is located on the shores of Mexico's largest freshwater lake, Lake Chapala. This lake is 53 miles long and 17 miles wide. Walking to the shoreline one will see a type of weed (water hyacinth) that has proved to be a voracious pest in recent years. This weed is multiplying rapidly and clogging waterways of the lake. Unfortunately this weed has gained a foothold due to the dropping water levels of the lake, because of the … [Read more...]

Guadalajara, Mexico – Restaurants

by Dave · Leave a Comment

From personal experience visiting other Mexican cities including Guadalajara, I have found that the cleanest restaurants and the ones with generally very good food are located in larger hotels. However, one should not overlook the smaller restaurants - do not rely solely on online ratings, ask locals for recommendations. Any prices listed are rough estimates for the cost of dinner for one person. However, most of these restaurants serve lunch … [Read more...]

Hopland, CA – Restaurants

by Dave · Leave a Comment

While Hopland is small, it does feature a surprisingly number of good restaurants. Here are a few we have visited to date: Blubird Cafe has been located in downtown Hopland for years and is our go to restaurant when we find ourselves in town. The service is friendly, the food delicious. Recommended items include the elk burger and the Tuscan salad with the addition of ahi tuna on top. Many ingredients are sourced locally including local beef … [Read more...]

Manzanillo, Mexico – Las Hadas

by Dave · Leave a Comment

Words cannot begin to describe the beauty of Las Hadas Resort. It is listed as one of the top 400 resorts in the world. Almost every amenity that that one can think of can be found on site. It attracts a wealthy set of of well-heeled travelers from all over the world. Besides the main hotel the resort features numerous white washed Arabian looking buildings nestled into the sides of a steep hill. Las Hadas is located on the Santiago Peninsula … [Read more...]

Manzanillo, Mexico – Cuyutlan & Paraiso

by Dave · 4 Comments

Cuyutlan & Paraiso are located 30 miles southeast of Manzanillo. Not built up, a number of smaller fishing villages are located in the region along with several fine seafood restaurants. I like this area compared to the city of Manzanillo because this is rural Mexico and is well-removed from the beaten path of many tourists. It is a popular spot for vacationing Mexican families, many of whom are from Guadalajara. Cuyutlan like several of the … [Read more...]

Manzanillo, Mexico – Restaurants

by Dave · 3 Comments

Most of the fancier restaurants are located on or quite close to beaches. There is also a good selection of restaurants in or near the center of town surrounding the primary zocalo (public square). Most of the good restaurants will serve bottled water instead of tap water. However, I recommend asking if they serve bottled water at all restaurants you eat at. Or simply drink beer. Restaurant Bar Roca del Mar is located on the east side of … [Read more...]
