Hiking Mt. Hollywood & Endeavor Appearance

October 12, 2012 by Dave5 Comments

I had another epic few days in Los Angeles. As like nearly all my visits to town, this one was a whirlwind event filled few days. I was invited by LA City Councilman Tom LaBonge on a hike of Mt. Hollywood to honor the London summer olympics as well as the closing of summer. This is a great hike - 1.5 miles to the summit nearly all up hill. The day was hot, the day was clear - I sweated as I climbed with fellow travelers @michelleyam and … [Read more...]

Matka Canyon, Macedonia

September 12, 2012 by Dave3 Comments

Pulled into Skopje late last night and like many of the cities in the nearby countries - easily found free wifi - a lifesaver when you are winging every hotel or hostel at the last minute. Looking for a break from the fast paced travel of the last few days - I got up Sunday morning and caught the early bus to Matka - which is just on the outskirts of the city. Most cities would kill to have a place like this within spitting distance of its … [Read more...]

So, Saipan…Surprise Me!

August 1, 2012 by Dave7 Comments

So, Saipan - we heard there wasn't much to see on your small island and our expectations were low after reading a number of negative reviews online. Sure there is poker in nearly every laundromat, an inordinate number of empty buildings, some falling into disrepair, an underlying problem with a gambling addiction, hence several 24-hour pawn shops - and nearly every market displaying permanent signs indicating "we accept food stamps" with … [Read more...]

Hawaii Volcanoes’ National Park – August 2012

August 1, 2012 by DaveLeave a Comment

Hawaii Volcanoes' is Hawaii's only National Park and is appropriately located outside of a small town called Volcano on the "big island". There are a number of attractions to see here and some of the attractions change (the lava flows for example). The Crater Rim drive is only partially open due to every changing lava flows. Be sure to stop at the main visitor center, just past the main park entrance. Rangers can give you updates on where the … [Read more...]

Kakum Rainforest, Ghana – June 2012

June 1, 2012 by DaveLeave a Comment

Kakum Rainforest, Ghana - Kakum National Park is located about 30 kilometers from the town of Cape Coast. Cape Coast has an abundant number of guesthouses. Depending on traffic and the number of potholes allow about 45 minutes to the park entrance. You must have a guide to enter the hiking trails, you are not allowed to walk the trails by yourself, which is a shame. The main attraction is the virgin rainforest and the world's longest canopy … [Read more...]

Maxwell Mays Wildlife Refuge, Rhode Island

May 27, 2012 by Paul Kandarian1 Comment

The late Rhode Island artist Maxwell Mays had long talked about giving the 300 acres he owned in that state's rural Coventry to the Audubon Society of Rhode Island upon his passing. Someone asked him why. Maxwell Mays Wildlife Refuge - cottage from across pond "I would like this land to stay open," he said. "I would like this land to breathe." He died in 2009, and gave the land that is now known as the Maxwell Mays Wildlife Refuge. … [Read more...]

Malealea Lodge – Lesotho

May 25, 2012 by DaveLeave a Comment

This remote lodge is located just under 2000 meters in the mountains of Southwest Lesotho (the land locked country within South Africa). Because of its isolated location it is a destination in and of itself. It is peaceful here - the wind blows through the pines and the air is fresh. Delicious mountain air becomes even more invigorating to breathe after a heavy rain. The highlight of a stay is the fact that it is remote - coupled with a … [Read more...]
