Banff, Jasper & Glacier

April 12, 2010 by DaveLeave a Comment

Banff, Jasper & Glacier by Lonely Planet This, the one book in Lonely Planet's new National Park series that covers Canadian parks (Banff & Jasper), is a well presented in depth guide to these two parks as well as Glacier. The focus of the National park series is outdoor activities and Lonely Planet does not disappoint with their detailed itineraries, hiking options, adventure options, and family friendly trips. Banff & Jasper are among the … [Read more...]

Magical Maui

April 1, 2010 by DaveLeave a Comment

Magical Maui. While Maui is a fairly small island (two peninsulas separated by a flat section) there is a rich diversity of attractions and activities to easily fill up a week. Maui is touristy yet Maui is not touristy - the contrasts between the different parts of the island are great. For those who enjoy the manufactured life on vacation including resorts, condos and or beach life with all the amenities and development should look immediately … [Read more...]

Introduction to Northern Napa Valley

March 15, 2010 by DaveLeave a Comment

The Napa Valley is anchored by Mt. St. Helena in the north and the city of Napa in the south. In between you find the towns of Calistoga, St. Helena, Rutherford, Oakville, and Yountville. These towns are spread out throughout the valley along Highway 29 (which is the main road through Napa Valley on the west side of the valley). The distance from the city of Napa in the south to Calistoga in the north is about 26 miles. The valley is narrow as it … [Read more...]

Travel Spotlight: Jordan

November 1, 2009 by Dave10 Comments

Jordan is one of those fantastic countries that has an excellent balance between both natural and historical attractions. In this part of the Middle East everything is located "close" to one another. Jordan is surrounded by a number of countries, it is a small country itself and as a result all of the major attractions are usually within just a several hours drive of one another. The Jordanian people are very friendly and hospitable and are … [Read more...]

Yosemite

by Dave · 10 Comments

The shoulder seasons (early spring, mid to late fall) are excellent times for visiting Yosemite National Park. The weather is a bit cooler than the heat of the summer (nights are chilly but days warm up nicely) and you are sure to miss the masses of crowds that converge on the valley floor during the mid summer. Not to be outdone is the winter season - Badger Pass Ski Area with its set of lifts, runs and an excellent ski school is found within … [Read more...]

Yosemite – Valley Floor

by Dave · Leave a Comment

We heard someone once say that living in Mariposa County will turn you into a photographer. Perhaps just visiting Yosemite will do the trick. Picturesque locations await you from massive granite formations to amazing waterfalls, to sweeping mountain vistas to alpine lakes. 95% of the visitors to Yosemite National Park visit 5% of its total landmass - this 5% being the valley floor. As a result it is fairly easy to become immersed in Yosemite's … [Read more...]

Yosemite – Attractions & Activities

by Dave · Leave a Comment

Mariposa Sequoia Grove is the largest grove in the area and is located just 2 miles from the southern park entrance along Highway 41. Note that the Mariposa Grove Road is closed during the winter so you have to park at the park's south entrance and walk 4 miles roundtrip to the grove. This grove is also home to the Grizzly Giant, one of the largest Sequoia trees in the world. Another place to visit these giant trees is at the smaller Tuolumne … [Read more...]

Yosemite – Lodging

by Dave · Leave a Comment

The following are select hotels in Mariposa or Tuolumne County's as well as within Yosemite's park borders. Ahwahnee Hotel or sometimes mistakenly branded as The Majestic Yosemite Hotel is without a doubt the premier hotel to stay at in Yosemite. Location, location, location. This is always key when you are seeking inspirational natural beauty and this hotel is in the heart of it. In addition, besides the main building 24 small private … [Read more...]

Visiting Iguazu Falls

July 10, 2009 by Dave11 Comments

Iguazu Waterfalls are among the most amazing waterfalls on the planet. Do not underestimate the time you need here - allow at least 1/2 day for the Brazilian side and at minimum a full day for the Argentina side. These falls are spread between the Brazil and Argentina border and extend up the Rio Iguacu several miles. The only similar waterfalls in comparison are Victoria Falls on the Zambezi River between Zambia and Zimbabwe. The massive … [Read more...]

The Island of the Eccentrics

June 7, 2009 by Lorena Di NolaLeave a Comment

You have to be a little eccentric to live here' - said Corinna as she welcomed us to her house. To many in the village she is more than eccentric: she is a witch. Dressed in a long black gown, her hair hidden in a headscarf, she is in no hurry to fight the rumour. When the superstitious villagers saw twenty foreign women getting off the water taxi, armed with an array of lotions and potions to fight mosquitoes and prevent sunburn, they had reason … [Read more...]
