Exploring near Khao Yai National Park, Thailand

May 11, 2014 by Dave5 Comments

Our winemaker friend was in town, visiting from the Napa Valley in California. Immediately we thought of taking him to the Khao Yai Wine Trail - which features a number of wineries located near this National Park. Our destination was Granmonte Vineyards an established winery in Asoke Valley - about 3 hours from where we live. Along with the winery, they also run the Vincotto Restaurant (delicious Mediterranean cuisine) and a guesthouse. The … [Read more...]

casacarboni italian cooking school & enoteca, Barossa Valley

April 22, 2014 by DaveLeave a Comment

Benvenuti a casa carboni! You open their door and are warmly greeted by the owners of this fine establishment - either husband or wife Matteo or Fiona Carboni. If you happen to glance to your right you are also warmly greeted by glowing comments that prior guests have hand written on the wall after taking one of Matteo's culinary classes. And perhaps yet further still are the enticing aromas coming from the kitchen or possibly the freshly brewed … [Read more...]

Special Jungle Curry: Thai Street Food, Close Encounters of the Third-World Kind

April 13, 2014 by John Edwards4 Comments

An American backpacker cannot decide whether budget restaurants or street food offer the best fetish of freshness until he visited one of Thailand’s best outdoor night markets, serving “SPECIAL JUNGLE CURRY.” As someone used to eating Thai food in New York City, with restaurants with babytalk names like “Yum Yum” and “Tastee Thai,” I was blown away when I tasted real Siamese fare for the first time in Bangkok’s Banglamphu district, an area … [Read more...]

Touring Australia’s Barossa Valley

March 25, 2014 by DaveLeave a Comment

The Barossa Valley, when compared to the age of the European wine regions is rather young. However if you look deeper you realize there is a lot of "history" here. These are some of the oldest soils on the planet - the mountain ranges have been so well weathered they are now just gentle rolling hills. The Barossa is one of Australia's earliest wine regions - having been founded not by the British but by German settlers in the early 1840's. … [Read more...]

Stowe’s Simple Surprises

March 22, 2014 by Leslie CarboneLeave a Comment

Sometimes luxury is in the simple things. Driving the last ten miles along Route 100 toward Stowe, Vermont, I was entering another way of life.  There are no sky-scrapers, no fast-food chains, no billboards or even back-lit signs.  There are independent little one- and two-storey shops, selling cheeses and maple syrups and cider doughnuts. I pulled into the parking lot at the recently renovated Topnotch Resort and Spa and quickly ducked … [Read more...]

The Royal Horseguards Hotel, London

March 16, 2014 by Carolan NathanLeave a Comment

One of London’s most elegant hotels is The Royal Horseguards situate on the Embankment overlooking the mighty River Thames flowing sedately along to the sea. This grand property has been the center of a seated establishment for many a decade and still offers warmth, glamour and service to its patrons. Many politicians and statesmen frequent the hotel today because of its closeness to the Houses of Parliament and Ministry of … [Read more...]

Napa River Inn Getaway

March 6, 2014 by Catherine Sweeney2 Comments

As San Francisco Bay Area locals living just south of the city, we have many opportunities for great day trips and getaways. One of the well-known areas within our reach for short visits is the Napa Valley wine region. Recently, we took a ride on the Napa Valley Wine Train and had a tour of Long Meadow Ranch during a two night stay at the Napa River Inn. I'd previously heard very positive reviews of the hotel and can now understand why it gets … [Read more...]

The Unexpected Charms of Dusseldorf

February 12, 2014 by Allison TibaldiLeave a Comment

Dusseldorf was the last stop on my recent trip to Germany.  After the non-stop excitement of Berlin and the Grande Dame beauty of Dresden, my expectations were low.  Dusseldorf was a city I associated with trade fairs and big business, neither of which hold my interest.  Instead, what I got was a city bursting at the seams with a vigorous art scene, robust cultural life and plenty of culinary mojo.  It’s a convenient city to visit, thanks to … [Read more...]

Five Great Drives Around the World

February 1, 2014 by Stephanie BLeave a Comment

Just like a garden is only as good as its soil, or a place is only as good as it’s people, a car is only as good as the road underneath it and whether you’re into grand tourers, sporty hatchbacks or just bundling the family into the back of the MPV, seeking out great roads can make a long drive into an epic adventure! The only real question is where to find these fabulous drives, and to help you get on your way, here’s GoMotorTrade’s guide to the … [Read more...]

Praying for Rain on Patmos

January 13, 2014 by John EdwardsLeave a Comment

John M. Edwards plans to tour the cave where St. John wrote the Bible’s “Book of Revelations” on an idyllic Greek island called Patmos. . . . On the little-known island of “Arki” near Patmos, Greece, four travelers stared at the boat docking under a cliff-shrouded curl of surf and sand resembling a sneer. “Smugglers!” my new friend Leo, an Argentine of Italian descent and owner of a “finca” in Welsh Patagonia, exclaimed. All of us … [Read more...]
