Pencils In The Land Of Flowers

July 3, 2013 by Adrian LandinLeave a Comment

Adrian buying pencils for the kids from the local shop in the fishing village

After hopping off our motorbikes we made our way down the dirt road leading up to the ocean. With the mid-afternoon sun blazing, the smell of yesterday's drying fish was stout. As we passed by the makeshift shops and shacks, we captured the local women's attentiond. They were all seated upon dusty edges raised above the junky, polluted streets (every other one with a newborn plugged into one of her breasts) and quietly began whispering. Stopping … [Read more...]

Finding the real Bahamas one drink at a time

June 16, 2013 by Paul KandarianLeave a Comment

OK, so I went to the Bahamas once before, as part of a cruise, putting in at Nassau and instantly clouding my view of the Bahamas as a whole, perceiving a place of giant cruise ships, sweaty tourists, over-priced gift shops and sheer sensory overload. Then most recently I visited Abaco Beach Resort and Boat Harbour Marina in Marsh Harbour on Great Abaco Island, a sedately unhurried resort, and was proven wrong. That, and having a Goombay Smash … [Read more...]

Afghanistan Exposed

May 7, 2013 by Savannah Grace2 Comments

Just over one year into our odyssey, while headed overland to Europe, we ventured through Afghanistan. Rocking atop burlap sacks in the open-backed truck, I watched as Peshawar faded into the morning’s mirage. Knowing I’d never return in this lifetime, I felt history being made beneath my feet as upturned dust exposed ancient stories. With a mandatory armed-escort riding in the front, I knew I better play by the rules. At 50C, halfway to the … [Read more...]

Destination: Buenos Aires, Argentina

March 19, 2013 by High Heeled TravelerLeave a Comment

I could see myself, watching myself. An “out of body experience,” they call it. I was naked, wallowing hysterically in the crisp, clean, white sheets of the king-sized bed in my Marriott hotel room. I hadn’t eaten for many hours, too tired, emotional, and downright fearful to leave the room to forage for even a candy bar, of which there were plenty. Abundant bodegas were filled to the brim with candy brands foreign and domestic; chocolate … [Read more...]

A Road Trippers Case for Traveling by Car

February 28, 2013 by Eric White3 Comments

Highway 191, AZ

Taking a road trip is my favorite way to put "things" back into perspective. It's easy to let yourself get caught up in the trivialities of daily life and forget that this is bigger than the individual. A road trip can be just the thing to spark some creativity, break out of the mundane with some spontaneity or even deal with pain. There's comfort in seeing new things and the best way to challenge yourself and your views is by meeting new people … [Read more...]

Charming and Mysterious Mazatlan

February 9, 2013 by Catherine Sweeney8 Comments

We had never been to Mazatlan, Mexico before and weren’t sure what to expect — except beautiful beaches and luxury resorts, perhaps. We found those and so much more, including history, culture and adventure. Mazatlan is a charming Mexican city with a distinctive character and even a little mystery. In Mazatlan, traditions have continued for many years allowing it to maintain an authenticity that one doesn’t find in many resort areas. The people … [Read more...]

Traveling in the North Country Fair… Part 2 The Spirit of the Catskills

January 15, 2013 by Richard BangsLeave a Comment

Before arriving at a new place we all carry the luggage of pre-conceptions. There are usually holes in this kit; we’re almost always wrong, at least to some extent, about our notions. My idea of the Catskills came from two very different periods, the live television run of the 1950s; and the Summer of Love in 1969, the year of Woodstock. As a young boy I would run home from school every day to turn on the TV and drink in whatever show or … [Read more...]

More from Sydney…

January 8, 2013 by Dave5 Comments

This time of year is an extremely pricey time to be in Sydney (Sydney is not a cheap city to travel in regardless of the time of year) - the New Years Eve fireworks over the opera house is watched by 1.5 billion people around the world and visitors from the rest of Australia and around the world come here to see this annual event. The harbor and streets are all closed to traffic during this time - and the choice viewing spots near the Opera house … [Read more...]

Some weeks we wade through hundreds of links to add to our always growing travel links directory (over 20,000 now!) - occasionally we update several thousand in a week. Hanging out in Narita Japan

June 29, 2012 by DaveLeave a Comment

Woke up this morning on some straw mat in a room I had never seen before. This was fine as I'm used to sleeping on hard surfaces. The confusion became clearer as the fog lifted from the sleep deprived mind and I vaguely remembered landing in Narita, Japan last night. The drive to this guesthouse was a blur - but I do remember the driver turning off his engine at every stop light, turning off his lights every time he stopped and driving with both … [Read more...]
