We arrived in South Africa with no plans. A quick scan of the airport revealed a number of name brand car rental companies - so we bee-lined for the only Internet Cafe we could find and used one of the online car reservation companies. Within 40 minutes of making our reservation we had signed countless forms and were sitting in our almost brand new Nissan Sentra. This was the only "automatic" transmission vehicle we could find at the entire … [Read more...]
Hana, Maui – Hawaii – January 2012
Hana is located on the Eastern side of Maui. The "Drive to Hana" is popularized on t-shirts and is often discussed among tourists. This "drive" usually takes about 2.5 to 3 hours although it can certainly be done in a shorter time if there is little or no traffic. Many tourists make this drive out and back in one day and as a result the morning can see quite a bit of traffic out and in the afternoon much of this traffic returns. If you can swing … [Read more...]
Bangkok Day Tripping
We are always going into Bangkok for something. This time for yellow fever vaccinations - I had mine last year for Cote d'Ivoire (good for 5 years) - this time around for Syy for our January trip to Botswana, Lesotho, Swaziland and Mozambique. Its not easy getting Yellow Fever vaccs in Bangkok - only available on the weekdays - hospitals don't offer it so we ended up going to the Red Cross Clinic at the Snake Farm. A Storm on the River Missouri
I was a hundred or so miles into a 2,341-mile canoe trip on the Missouri River when I stumbled on my first big storm. The first indication came when my hat lifted from my head and flew forward into the water. High winds came up well ahead of an advancing cold front a mile or so upriver from Fort Benton, Montana. What had been blowing before had been a breeze, but soon rose to twenty or thirty miles per hour. The filled with dust and sand, which … [Read more...]
Enjoying downtown Napa
We spent the evening enjoying two fine Napa restaurants. Usually I'm perfectly satisfied with one meal but on this one evening we opted for two full course dinners at two different restaurants! First we popped into the new restaurant Charlie Palmer Steak at the Archer hotel but didn't eat anything. We then hit up Eiko's on 1st Street, downtown Napa. This is a restaurant that specializes in authentic Japanese cuisine including seasonal dishes … [Read more...]
Huevos Estrellados in Madrid
After having lived in a couple of different places apart from the people I met and memories I made there is at least one dish or a particular restaurant that I keep in mind and miss. I have been living in Spain for over 2 years now, but I have yet to visit the Spanish capital. So far I haven't really had the time to go. A dish that I have grown to like in Barcelona, but actually has its origins in Madrid is huevos estrellados or rotos … [Read more...]
Fondue and Raclette in Paris
Along with cold temperatures and the holiday season comes the perfect time to eat fondue and raclette again. It's sort of a cozy, more sociable meal as you gather around the fondue pot or the raclette grill on the table over a good glass of wine. However, it is the art of make fondue is more delicate than it seems. Furthermore, not everyone has the right equipment and ingredients at home or maybe you prefer to leave the proper way of … [Read more...]

Visit Raleigh: Spotlight on individuals who love what they do!
We spent a few days last week touring downtown Raleigh, visiting some very good restaurants and world class museums - not to mention a historic filled Segway tour and a late night ghost story infused pub crawl! I recently finished an article about my time in Raleigh: www.davestravelcorner.com/journals/destination-north-america/spotlight-raleigh-north-carolina and here is a video highlighting a few people I interviewed who show a passion … [Read more...]
