Santa Barbara, CA – State Street

by Dave · Leave a Comment

If there is one street that Santa Barbara revolves around, it is State Street. State Street is the heart and soul of Santa Barbara. It is a mix of galleries, museums, theatres, and other quaint shops. Some advice regarding parking; park your car in one of the parking lots next to State Street or curbside on one of it's perpendicular adjoining streets. Then simply walk to State Street. Parking is tough to find directly on State Street and can … [Read more...]

Santa Barbara, CA – Museums

by Dave · Leave a Comment

For the relatively small population of Santa Barbara, the amount of and quality of museums will surprise you. Here are a select few that we have personally visited; they are listed in alphabetical order: Carpinteria Valley Museum of History is located at 956 Maple Ave, just south of Carpinteria Ave. Descendants of Carpinteria's pioneer families donated household furnishings and clothing to this museum. A turn of the century schoolroom and … [Read more...]

Santa Barbara, CA – Beaches

by Dave · Leave a Comment

Santa Barbara and surrounding vicinity features a diverse set of beaches ranging from the state park beaches north of town, to the wide flat sand beaches in the vicinity of lower State Street. Beach side bars and restaurants can be found - and are part of the enjoyment of visiting some of the area beaches. State Park beaches charge an entry/parking fee - a receipt is given to you with a piece of tape that you tape to your windshield. Once you … [Read more...]

Santa Barbara, CA – Shopping

by Dave · 1 Comment

We always love to mix a little bit of shopping into our travels, especially in Santa Barbara. The city features numerous boutique shops, historical shopping centers, and galleries. Paseo Nuevo is one of our favorites; it is located between State and Chapala Streets in downtown Santa Barbara. Look for the orange trees planted along the walkways near the entrance to Paseo Nuevo along State Street. Usually there are oranges on the trees and … [Read more...]

San Luis Obispo, CA – Cal Poly State University

by Dave · Leave a Comment

California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly SLO) is located due north of downtown and highway 101. Just look for the concrete "P" stuck on the side of a hill above the campus. This four year college is known for its engineering, agricultural & business schools as well as IT and computer programming degrees. Cal Poly's motto is "Learn by doing." This motto is evident on campus as there are over 350 different clubs and many 'hands on' … [Read more...]

San Luis Obispo, CA – Outdoor Activities

by Dave · 2 Comments

Bishop Peak is a very popular hike with Cal Poly and Cuesta students. This is one of a series of nine volcanic mountains and hills that run from San Luis Obispo to Morro Bay (referred to as the Nine Sisters). From the top of Bishop Peak there are excellent views overlooking the ocean and all of San Luis Obispo and the surrounding hills. The primary trail leads off from a dirt parking lot on the north side of Foothill Blvd heading west … [Read more...]

San Luis Obispo, CA – Apple Farm

by Dave · Leave a Comment

Apple Farm is a country style inn and restaurant located in the northern most part of San Luis Obispo just off the 101 Freeway. Numerous charming and quaint souvenirs are sold in the gift shop next to the restaurant. We highly recommend the breakfast's at Apple Farm. This often becomes a tradition for parents when visiting their children at nearby Cal Poly to take them here for breakfast. And years afterwards the memories remain of the good … [Read more...]

San Luis Obispo, CA – The Mission

by Dave · 1 Comment

This mission is often called the 'Prince' of the missions. It was named for the 13th century saint, the Bishop of Toulouse. The church is still in operation. The tile roof is the first of its kind used on the California missions. They used tile instead of wood or thatch because often they would be faced with flaming arrow attacks by the Indians. There is an excellent museum that contains a large collection of Chumash Indian artifacts and … [Read more...]

San Luis Obispo, CA – Downtown

by Dave · Leave a Comment

Downtown San Luis Obispo (www.downtownslo.com) is a collection of numerous cafes + restaurants + brew pubs, clothing stores, sports stores, a few galleries, quaint shops, and reflective of a college town, quite a few stand alone bars. The downtown area is best seen by walking. Ditch the car along one of the side streets just outside of the downtown area, or one of three parking garages (Two on Palm Street and one on Marsh Street). Our … [Read more...]

San Luis Obispo, CA – Lodging

by Dave · Leave a Comment

San Luis Obispo has a diversity of lodging - perhaps more then other towns of this size due to two factors; it is a touristy region and because Cal Poly is located here. Many of the properties are located on upper Monterey street and or in the south of town on Madonna Road. The cheapest lodging can be found during the middle of the week. Prices listed range from the lowest (the off season rates/single person) to the highest (holidays and … [Read more...]
