Visa run to Cambodia

April 15, 2014 by DaveLeave a Comment

My visa within Thailand was expiring in 2 days. Time to make another run for the border. Usually we are off in another country at some point during our time in Thailand so this is not an issue. But this year we just stayed domestic. Poipet on the Cambodia border is the closest border crossing to our village so we headed out that way. We reached this dusty chaotic border town in 2 hours. As is always the case we were met with enterprising men … [Read more...]

Special Jungle Curry: Thai Street Food, Close Encounters of the Third-World Kind

April 13, 2014 by John Edwards4 Comments

An American backpacker cannot decide whether budget restaurants or street food offer the best fetish of freshness until he visited one of Thailand’s best outdoor night markets, serving “SPECIAL JUNGLE CURRY.” As someone used to eating Thai food in New York City, with restaurants with babytalk names like “Yum Yum” and “Tastee Thai,” I was blown away when I tasted real Siamese fare for the first time in Bangkok’s Banglamphu district, an area … [Read more...]

How to Barter for Paradise by Michael Wigge Michael Wigge, the man from Germany who pushes the boundaries when he travels is back at it again! This time he's bartering his way around the world with the hopes of securing a home in Hawaii. Koh Yao Noi Island, Thailand

March 23, 2014 by DaveLeave a Comment

If Thailand is considered the land of smiles, then Koh Yao Noi is the island of smiles. The locals are genuine, down to earth, very friendly and yes, often you will be greeted with a smile. You will surprisingly find this small island laid back despite being only about a 30 minute boat road from two fairly developed urban areas focusing on mass tourism - Phuket and Krabi. There are no high rises here, crazy nightlife and accompanying noise, … [Read more...]

The Lost Girls

March 15, 2014 by DaveLeave a Comment

The Lost Girls by Jennifer Baggett, Holly C. Corbett and Amanda Pressner The odds that these three girls would all meet and then decide they would travel together for a year in 2006 (by the way, they were still friends at the end of the trip), all while busy building careers in New York - and then write a book about their adventures is slim to none! But this is exactly what Jennifer, Holly and Amanda accomplished with the release of this book … [Read more...]

Bluffworks founder Stefan Loble recently reached out to me indicating he had released the next generation of the Bluffworks pants. Odd and Unusual Bangkok

January 25, 2014 by Dave2 Comments

So, where do you go when you have seen most of the major attractions in Bangkok and you have a friend in town visiting for the first time? You seek out the odd and unusual. First we jumped on the Skytrain, got off at Chitlom, wandered for a bit until we reached the luxury Swissotel Nai Lert. We were not coming specifically to see the hotel, rather we were after the Tubtim Shrine on the grounds of the hotel. This is a fertility shrine … [Read more...]

Arriving on a little piece of Paradise, Ko Yao Noi Island

January 20, 2014 by Dave7 Comments

A power boat in southern Thailand greeted us as we arrived by taxi from the Phuket Airport. The blue waters beckoned and invited us along for the journey. Boats in this part of the country are great melting pots. Europeans, Americans (north and south) and plenty of folks from all parts of Asia were coming to Ko Yao Noi for a variety of reasons - to get away budget style, to park it at one of the small luxury properties, for honeymoon or ferrying … [Read more...]

Finding a man crush on St. Thomas

January 18, 2014 by Paul KandarianLeave a Comment

It's not often I get a man crush, something usually reserved for sports figures. But Omar and Romulo, two burly boys weighing a combined 1,000 pounds, had me at the first kiss. Omar and Romulo, along with Remo and Franco, are four massive sea lions that you can get up close and personal with – including getting bussed on the cheeks  – at Coral World Ocean Park in St. Thomas, where you can also swim with sharks and sea turtles, do snuba diving … [Read more...]
