Village Updates, Thailand

January 10, 2014 by Dave3 Comments

We have been infested with pigeons! They are nesting all over our roof - any crevice or corner is fair game. We've moved out a number of nests - found a number of eggs and covered any open areas on the roof with some sort of thorny plant material to discourage future nesting. Still they flock to our roof at all hours of the day and night. The scratching continues even in the early morning. Last night at 3am I was awakened dramatically by a … [Read more...]

It is cold in Thailand! Back to our Village

January 5, 2014 by Dave9 Comments

The coldest temperature Bangkok ever recorded was 10.5 C back in the 1950's. It has been cold here the entire month of December. With low temperatures running between 15 and 17 in Bangkok over night for the past few nights - it has not felt like a normal Thai winter. At our village in Eastern Thailand we have had to pull out the sweaters and warm blankets for the evening. Normally this time of year it cools off at night and by 10am the next … [Read more...]

December 30, 2013 by DaveLeave a Comment

Caption: The Bangkok Ball is lit up on the roof of Tower Club at lebua during a test run for the New Year’s Eve event. WHAT: Marking the beginning of a new New Year’s Eve tradition, Thailand will ring in 2014 with the first ever Bangkok Ball Drop at lebua. Full Moon Party on Ko Samet, Thailand

November 30, 2013 by John EdwardsLeave a Comment

John M. Edwards survives a psychedelic breakdown--and hubris--on a backpacker’s hub off the coast of Thailand. . . . In Thailand, it is not necessary to have an actual full moon shining down on you in order to throw together a “Full Moon Party”—just loads and loads of magic mushrooms. The decidedly pagan, almost “Glastonberry,” Halloweeny atmosphere of the event, featuring a wild bunch of fragrant hippies—proud of their piercings, … [Read more...]

My Winter Wish List for the Holidays

November 12, 2013 by Dave8 Comments

As the weather cools, travel heats up this time of year- visits to friends and family during the holidays, local trips to experience outdoor activities or destination trips to warmer locales certainly sounds appealing - especially as I write this - huddled next to a space heater. The warmth of this heater is making me reflect upon warm weather destinations that I visited earlier this year; Bermuda (an easy flight from the East Coast), Sydney, … [Read more...]

August 29, 2013 by Clelia Mattana7 Comments

Sail Boat Experience at Arcipelago della Maddalena Sardinia

Sardinia is one of the most popular summer destinations for tourists from all over the world. With more than 3000 km of white sand beaches and turquoise waters, Sardinia is a true paradise on earth! I know Sardinia very well as I was born and raised on this beautiful island, and after 20 years of living here, I have explored nearly everything - from the most beautiful and secluded beaches to the cultural sites inland. The most … [Read more...]

A rickshaw driving through an intersection in Kathmandu, Nepal

We'd been in Nepal's bustling capital city less than 24 hours. In what has become routine upon arriving in a new city, I was up around sunrise eager to wander out and explore the streets of a place that's been a dream of mine for over a decade. Like every other SE Asian country's capital, Kathmandu's streets are chaotic. Chaotic, I said. The roads are awful. Resembling heavily bombed strips of concrete, the streets are extremely fractured and … [Read more...]

How to Avoid Getting Bad Bowl Cuts Abroad

June 29, 2013 by John EdwardsLeave a Comment

An American backpacker braves a bowl cut (almost) from a proverbial Third World barber. . . . The man in front of me, shivering in the swiveling chair, was almost completely bald with two bushy fluffs upon either side of his noggin, resembling a sad circus clown with no friends. Or, Bozo. Or, Krusty. Or, Larry from "The Three Stooges." Then The Man with the Haircut eyed himself with envy, congratulating himself on now almost … [Read more...]
