Iquitos, Peru

by Dave · 2 Comments

Iquitos, Peru is the largest city in the world not connected to other cities by roads. It is located in eastern Peru deep in the heart of the Amazonian rainforest - next to the great Amazon river. The only way to reach Iquitos is by plane (which is the fastest and most direct), or by a boat up from Brazil along the Amazon river, or by bus and then boat if one is coming from western Peru. The Amazon river supplies nearly one quarter of the … [Read more...]

Iquitos, Peru – Guides

by Dave · Leave a Comment

Because Iquitos is difficult and expensive to get to and is somewhat off the beaten path, the city doesn't see huge numbers of travelers. Over eager for tourist dollars are a small number of "rabid guides". These type of guides will say most anything to get your business. They will blatantly lie, they will approach you on the street, may put their hands on your body, pretend to be your friend, make up stories they think you want to hear (like … [Read more...]

The Yellow Rose of Texas, Iquitos Peru – May 2005

May 1, 2005 by DaveLeave a Comment

The Yellow Rose of Texas is a must visit for any traveler to Iquitos Peru. Located just off the Plaza del Armas, the Yellow Rose of Texas, is run by former Texas Oil & Gas Engineer, Gerald Mayeaux. This place absolutely bleeds with character. Huge saddles rotate as seats at the bar. An eclectic variety of dead jungle animals adorn the walls and ceilings and hundreds of photos line the walls. The food is tremendous. Never have you had such tasty … [Read more...]

Sugar Hut Resort, Pattaya – April 2004

April 1, 2004 by DaveLeave a Comment

The Sugar Hut Resort & Restaurant is located between Pattaya & Jomtien Beach in Thailand. This "escape from reality" resort was founded in 1984. This is not your typical Pattaya stay. It is located in the midst of lush tropical foliage. Each "hut" is separate from the others by walkways through the foliage and as a result each bungalow is very private. All have balconies. Attention to detail shows here. There are 3 pools on the property … [Read more...]

Las Vegas, NV – Shows

by Dave · 1 Comment

No visit to Las Vegas is complete without seeing a show. Shows are incredibly popular and is the main reason why some people visit Las Vegas. They range in price from free often outdoor entertainment provided by the giant casinos to the $100+ per person show. Be sure to pick up a Las Vegas Visitors Guide (published by the Las Vegas Visitors & Convention Authority) - you can find these in or around the casino's - often the local Las Vegas … [Read more...]

Angkor Wat, Cambodia – Other Attractions

by Dave · Leave a Comment

Angkor Zoo is located off a dirt road (on the way to Angkor its just past the ticket gates) off of Charles De Gaulle Blvd. Approximate time here to see all the animals is about 30 to 40 minutes. Its a fairly small zoo with a great variety of birds and reptiles - over 100 species of animals are represented. The highlight are the bears and the cheetahs. A small dirty swimming pool is available for use - although I only saw children using it. Price … [Read more...]

Schulz Museum

The following is an article that first appeared in the April 2003 issue of Upbeat Times, a regional newspaper which is published once a month in Sonoma County, CA. I had just arrived at the Charles M. Schulz Museum and Research Center and was waiting in the front lobby when a young girl skipped in and the first excited words out of her mouth were "Mom, look its Snoopy!" I immediately saw what attracted her attention. On the wall were several … [Read more...]

Safari West, CA

by Dave · Leave a Comment

A "little piece" of Africa is available to the general public in Sonoma County, about 1 hour 20 minutes north of San Francisco. Safari West is a gem of a nature preserve located only about 20 minutes from Santa Rosa off of Mark West Springs Road at the corner of Franz Valley Road (3115 Porter Creek Road). The park is about 15 minutes from Calistoga in the northern part of the Napa Valley. Visiting Napa for some wine tasting? Need a break? Come … [Read more...]
