Flightcaster Launching Today
With FlightCaster, travelers learn about delays even before the airlines
notify them
| SAN FRANCISCO, CA - For frequent fliers, getting stuck with flight
delays is a regular problem. A new travel tool called FlightCaster plans
to make air travel more predictable by providing travelers with what
they term "delay prediction."

According to company co-founder Jason Freedman, "FlightCaster predicts
flight delays 6 hours before airline alerts. We take real-time
information and calculate the likelihood of a delay so travelers have
real options."
According to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, 25% of all
domestic flights in the U.S. are delayed. That means that 400,000
travelers everyday are left wondering whether they'll arrive at their
destinations on-time.
According to Freedman, the problem is worsened by a lack of
communication from the airlines. "We analyzed 10 years of flight
history. We looked at all of the significant delays, especially those
over an hour. We found that 75% of the time, airlines only post these
delays within 30 minutes of the scheduled departure."
The idea for flight delay prediction originated with co-founder Evan
Konwiser. "I'm a frequent flier myself. Like many other savvy travelers,
I learned to look for signs of a delay, asking questions like: Is my
aircraft at the gate? Are there any FAA alerts that might affect my
travel? Quickly, we figured out that a mathematician could use these
insights as variables in an algorithm."
The company is very protective of their algorithm. They claim that their
algorithms can produce more accurate information than even the airlines.
For travelers, the real question is can this fancy math actually help
you avoid a delay.
