The original Mrs. Mac’s Kitchen is located at 99336 Overseas Highway in Key Largo. Visitors driving through this part of the keys may easily miss this humble looking house with its muted greenish and pink Caribbean colors. This house dates from 1947 and the restaurant dates from 1976. Only two owners have overseen the operations since its beginning – today the restaurant is owned and operated by two sisters, Paula and Angie (Angie was originally hired here as a cook).
Popular with both locals and tourists the menu is varied for both breakfast, lunch and dinner. For a small restaurant their menu is surprisingly extensive and diverse! Alligator sausage? Now that is a dish once doesn’t often see. Mrs. Mac’s is known for several dishes including their homemade chili, konk chowder and their Key Lime Pie. Visitors can eat outside under their awning, inside or in the back – regardless a visit here is relaxed and quintessentially Florida Keys laid back.
The original Mrs. Mac’s is the oldest restaurant in Key Largo. A second Mrs. Mac’s Kitchen opened in 2011 a short drive from the original.
We dedicate this post to a very good friend Gari and friend of Dave’s Travel Corner who has since passed on – who first told us about Mrs. Mac’s some 20+ years ago and who used to be a huge fan of their Key Lime Pie.
As they say at Mrs. Macs, “Eat Well, Laugh Often, Live Long” – all great advice! For more information, visit: www.mrsmacskitchen.com
