Ruan Mai Restaurant, Krabi Thailand – December 2023

Ruan Mai Restaurant is located about a 10 minute drive west of downtown Krabi. Arguably the best restaurant in or near Krabi, this is special place that combines both a calming visual element and feel with excellent Thai food. In Thai, Ruen Mai means ‘old wooden house’ – the restaurant is a series of elevated wooden platforms covered with thatched roofs located above several small ponds. Features a liberal use of bamboo. Wooden walkways connect each of the individual dining spaces – often with potted vegetables and herbs growing along the walkways or flower petals floating in ceramic pots.

Founded in the 1990s its current location is currently its third home. Popular with both locals, Thai visitors mostly from Bangkok and some western visitors. Focuses on southern Thai cuisine – some of the dishes are very spicy but there is plenty of choose from that are no spicy. Also a number of veggie options for vegetarians. Known for curries but also some other delicious dishes including fried fern, eggs and veggies, and a dish that includes a number of ingredients (tiny seaweed ‘eggs’ for lack of a better term) and leaves for wrapping the ingredients. Excellent seafood including locally caught fish and soups.

We have eaten here several times and have never had a bad meal.

The restaurant is part of the Zero Carbon Resort program (ZCR) in which their overall carbon emission from the site is zero. Some solar panels are installed in one of the ponds. Very reasonably priced for the outstanding quality. Plenty of parking in a gravel lot in front of the restaurant. Beautifully designed and unique looking restrooms. Open daily from 1030-3pm and again from 5 to 930pm. Located at: 117 Moo 3 Sai Thai Subdistrict, Krabi Town. +66 89 288 3232 and visit: www.facebook.com/ruenmaikrabirestuarant

Yes, that is down your way. I was last here in 2020 for a lovely meal. But need to return again soon.
