Glimpses of a Golden Age

February 23, 2011 by Catherine SweeneyLeave a Comment

"Fight for a just cause. Love your fellow man. Live a good life." Taking the first two letters of each part of his motto, William Bourn named his lavish country estate Filoli. Bourn indeed lived a very good life in this 36,000 sq ft mansion with its 43 rooms and 17 fireplaces. The estate was built with his gold mining money in 1917, sold to shipping magnate, William Roth, in 1937 and is now maintained by The National Trust for Historic … [Read more...]

Visit the new ABC Museum in Madrid

February 22, 2011 by Miss MociLeave a Comment

Last November the Spanish capital added another reason to visit and rent apartments in Madrid. A new museum opened its doors, the Museo ABC de Dibujo e Ilustracion de Madrid. Conveniently situated close to the Conde Duque (an important address for art and culture in Madrid), the ABC Museum seeks to present the art of drawing and illustration. A majority of the works shown were published in the Spanish ABC newspaper as well as the magazine Blanco … [Read more...]

Cebu Paradise, History So Affluent

February 14, 2011 by Junfil OlarteLeave a Comment

A surge of Faithful Catholic devotees at the Basilica's prayer sanctuary. The Philippine Islands would never be in its present popularity had it not been for the stroke of luck which led to the discovery of Cebu by the great explorer Fernando Magallanes who first sighted Samar, Cebu's neighboring island, on March 16, 1521. Unlike many of its interesting destinations, this central part of the Philippines certainly does an important milestone … [Read more...]

As a worldly traveler, I'm happy to share all the ins and outs of the Eurail Pass- which continues to transport people of all ages throughout Europe. A Eurail Pass can really be considered an all access pass to the entire train network in select countries...and the best part...you get to choose the countries you would like to include. In fact, you have many options: One Country Pass: Your Eurail Pass can be a simple one country pass, for let's … [Read more...]

Enjoying Sea and Sand in Varadero: A Catamaran Seafari

February 13, 2011 by Habeeb SalloumLeave a Comment

Through the years while visiting Cuba's resort spot Varadero, I have participated in its, many land and sea activities, but I had never taken a catamaran sea tour. However, today, this was to be remedied. I was on my way to join a catamaran safari - one of Varadero's top tourist offerings. Everything in Varadero, a town of some 8,000 inhabitants is geared toward foreign visitors. A spread-out town edged by 22 km (13.5 mi) of sugary- white … [Read more...]

Undiscovered Brunei

February 8, 2011 by Dave8 Comments

Brunei Darussalam (meaning an Abode of Peace) is a country that one often cannot even locate on the world map. When I told friends I was coming to Brunei one said "oh, why don't you also visit India since its so close." Others told me they had to look the country up on Google Maps. A geographical lesson is obviously in order. Brunei is located on the large island of Borneo and is surrounded by the Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak. The rest … [Read more...]

Intro to Santa Barbara

February 5, 2011 by DaveLeave a Comment

Santa Barbara is like a bright tapestry, woven from time, and enriched with the colors of history and culture. Some cities grow old and then slowly die. Santa Barbara never grows old, just more elegant and appreciative of its past. Words cannot begin to describe the intimacy and sophisticated flavor of this city, only experience and a stay here, can do that. In 1925 a devastating earthquake left the downtown in ruins. Santa Barbara rebuilt … [Read more...]

Norfolk a surprise of food, arts and other delights

January 29, 2011 by Paul KandarianLeave a Comment

For me, the best part of traveling has to be the delight of surprise, finding unexpected pleasures in places you thought you had a handle on, even if you haven't been there before. Norfolk, Virginia, provided that in a great, grand way on a recent trip I took there, as I found it a place with scenes of the culinary, arts and sports stripe. I'd gone thinking, perhaps as a stereotypically snooty Northerner, "Well, old, southern … [Read more...]

Our Costa Brava Holiday

January 22, 2011 by James1 Comment

Last summer we went on holiday to Spain on the Costa Brava. We stayed at the Hotel Merce in Pineda de Mar (www.pinedademar.org). We loved this hotel. The food is very good, Spanish cuisine, with breakfast and abundant fruit and vegetables from the garden of the hotel owners. The rooms are good and with a cheap price. What distinguishes this hotel is its family and friendly atmosphere of the owners and staff of the Hotel. You feel in Spain. They … [Read more...]

Soaking up the slopes of Chamonix

January 18, 2011 by Ski ChamonixLeave a Comment

When it comes to holidays, I'll admit that I'm more likely to be seen sunning myself on a sandy beach than hurtling myself down a mountain. Previous experiences of being overtaken by smug six-year-olds powering down the mountain while I tentatively inch my way down the slope have, I'm afraid, left me somewhat scared. Nevertheless, I'm not generally one to be beaten and when the opportunity arose to face my demons I decided things really could … [Read more...]
